FAA FCC radio license

Hey Guys,

Im a current and qualified Airline Transport Pilot, and have had an FAA FCC Restricted radiotelephone operator permit since 2007.

Does anyone know if this license can be used to operate a ham radio, even at a Technician level?

Apologies if this has been asked before, I looked and couldn't find any info.

Thanks

No. You need a license for the service you want to use. The old GROL is akin to a General or Extra ham ticket in complexity

The exception is an emergency as always. But even then better have a good reason.

The easiest option Dan is to study online. QRZ has free study aids, and also hamtestonline.. I used the latter pay service, it is very nice.

It would be handy to do the Tech and General sequentially when you test, that will give you VHF/UHF and the General will give some HF. Here is a graphical chart of the frequency allocations.
