    Good Transmission, Poor Reception

The ideal installation for any antenna is using an NMO mount in the center of the roof of a vehicle. There was a graphic from Motorola or Larsen (?) that showed the loss on installs when installing anyplace on a vehicle. By putting the antenna down low and maybe shadowed (if have to see the...

How important to "see" your radio faceplate?

It's a personal preference. I like to see there note head of the rig but not in direct line of sight. I keep it where a glance from the corner of my eye allows me to see what is needed while not distracting me. For planned events having frequencies in memory is great. Just know that at times...

    Antenna thoughts

When you need to call for help looks ain't gonna cut it. The NMO270 rocks. I have a super gainer and an NMO270. I hate the dead spots driving around with the super gainer. It's a lot deafer than the nmo270 and didn't help me at all on the trail last week. Gave the wife the good antenna for her...

    Portable HF Suggestions

You can do a lot with a little. A used IC703 or FT817nd is small, lightweight and pretty flexible. Very popular for low current draw but high performance is the Elecraft line of gear. If you are looking at mobile then consider a TS480 or IC7100 or FT857 series rig. Lots of good stuff on...

Performance from different CB antenna locations.

Well you are doing car to car and not DX per the rules. So loss should be moot. Larsen or Motorola had a graphic online showing loss at various points on a vehicle. Finally, check out K0BG.com for ideas. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Dual Band Radio Opinions

Considered getting a general ticket? Might suggest not just V/UHF but HF rigs.

    hand helds

My argument against the Chinese stuff is they are bought to be disposable, when they work. If you are bringing a piece of kit and want to make sure it works, then buy something that has a good reputation. If it has a bad rep, it may be because its not worth carrying and having your life depend on.

    hand helds

Ham is the better option UNLESS your group has a specific preference, I.e. No one else is a ham. A reliable and simple HT is the FT60. Some SAR teams I know really recommend them due to ease of use. If you want to try tracking then a THD72a is preferred over the VX8DR since the Yaesu GPS is...

    BlendMount Radio mount

I use double sided tape until I get the mount location right. Never did Velcro. I also screwed mounts to the dash before. My next install is leaning towards a ram mount on the seat bolt. That may be tough depending on passenger legroom. I am not a fan, but have had to put up with, wires on the...

    Dual Band Radio Opinions

8900 is not a bad fallback. You do want two antennas for it if you plan on using all 4 bands at a minimum. 1 for 2/440 1 for 10/6 might I suggest getting a 54" solid Hustler mast.then put a 10m loading coil from Hustler on top. That gives you 6 and 10. Fwiw there used to be 11m coils do that...

    Dual Band Radio Opinions

Might I suggest stretching the budget for a used TMD700 or TMD710. These have APRS, extremely simple menu formats, and are bullet proof. I have an 8900. I like it. It's an 8800 with 6 and 10 FM. It's a good rig and I can't complain about it other than menus at times, might just be me. I had an...

12v to Radios: Running power cables.

First get the 2m off the cigarette plug. That plug is not rated for that. Could cause a fire. Next, go to K0BG.com and read up on ideas. No reason to twist anything. Third, you are looking at a major wiring job. That is a really good thing. Look at how some folks wire up for fridges for ideas...

PICTURE THREAD: Post up your Mobile HAM setups

Really neat install. Does the body panel fit over the radio bodies or did you do a custom panel? Thanks!
