Fuel can idea - does anybody know of such a thing?

That would be a great idea! I think it was Mercedes Benz who had a spare tire gas tank many years ago. Not sure the size of the rotopax, but couldn't you just build a 'sling' that holds a couple rotopax and then hoist up the sling?

    Sears Diehard Differences?

I have both of those batteries. Far as I can tell beyond what has been said already about marine/starting battery differences is: The marine battery has a 4 year warranty (that has helped me out since I shorted one and needed a replacement).

optimal traction when pulling a trailer

Have you pressed the gravel or did you press it when you had it laid? All the above suggestions are great, but one that hasn't been mentioned yet. It sounds like your issue isn't your truck setup but the road - and since you own the road, I'd suggest having a contractor w/a steamroller come...

A good foundation for an Expo rig? Suburban with Cat Diesel/Allison combo...

Just wondering if this would be a good place to start for an expedition rig? Looks to be an older body style suburban with a diesel conversion. Good tires, plenty of power and an Allison transmission. Plus a wing... http://savannah.craigslist.org/bar/4150759539.html

OT: Who is building their rig in case of a Doomsday scenario?

Good point, forgot about that. I'd still go with tablets just for space saving. I use my old MSR Sweetwater when backpacking, works well for this sort of thing.

Roof Rack Design and Accessory Mounting Questions

I would go with mesh as well - makes it nice to be able to be on the roof walking around without worrying about accidentally stepping on your roof. One drawback with mesh is it will likely make more noise. Worth the tradeoff if you ask me.

OT: Who is building their rig in case of a Doomsday scenario?

How did I miss this thread??? A few of my own thoughts: We (friends and family) have an emergency meet & greet schedule. Regardless of the situation, if there is a SHTF situation, we know to try and meet at X place on X day of the month. Around these parts (Portland, Oregon) the major...

    Camping - Firewood Gathering Tools

In general, I bring a bow saw and either a hatchet or axe to cut down some of the larger pieces. Mostly, though I take longer pieces, burn them in the middle and flip them over back into the fire once they are 2 pieces. In early season (spring) I'll occasionally bring a chainsaw just because...

Running 4-50w aux lights off of one relay

Those wire ratings are the minimum wire size. For lights, which seem to be very susceptible to voltage variation, I always bump up one (sometimes 2) wire sizes. This helps prevent light flicker. I figure the cost is basically the same, so a little insurance on the wire size works well. As a...

Wife Says I Bring Too Much Beer Camping

I plan 1/2 rack per day plus if I'm road tripping between camps, I'll stop somewhere and pick up a local brew (either a growler or a 6 pack). I never go home with beer - it's like firewood-you shouldn't cross contaminate between regions :) Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

I have my solenoid engaged in the IGN position, not ACC. This is so when I start the truck, both batteries are engaged. I have had my aux battery down below 4v and haven't had enough current draw when joining the batteries to be an issue (but again, they are 2ga wires). Using ACC prevents...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

This is an alternate solution. One that is the most common marine dual-battery way of doing things...this works for A LOT of people, and has for years. Somewhere in the thread is a discussion on this...if you trust yourself to flip the switch (both to engage, then disengage the batteries) it...

Rechargeable Battery Ideas for Ipad/ IPhone etc

I'm not sure I agree with you. Entirely depends on perspective Compared to the 15600mA pack I linked to above, here's the Goal Zero equivalent: http://www.goalzero.com/shop/p/151/Sherpa-50-Power-Pack/2:8/ Same battery capacity. Only a single USB, but adds a lot more connectivity for a...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

Sorry for the confusing diagram, I was drunk when I made it :) The switch can be either momentary or regular on/off switch. It is a 'backup' so that you can manually close the isolator and make both batteries work together (great for starting your truck or your Pinto). Many solenoids...

    Best tablets for navigation?

Be careful about this...many less expensive tablets (including the Nexus) don't support USB hosting which is needed for USB GPS... Make sure your tablet supports USB-to-go and it will likely work with an external GPS... A better option if your tablet doesn't have a GPS is to use a Bluetooth GPS...

Help me find this (in the US)!

A much cheaper (and more ghetto) alternative: Go HERE and buy some anderson connectors (I've used many from this place for many years, I think they are reliable). The connectors have two holes in the center line of the connector (between the leads). Screw through those holes down to your...
