1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

Got some time to get the light bar and rear lights hooked up. We are shaking the truck down in Baja in January, so extra lighting was a must! We went cheap and spent $50 for the front light bar and the rear LED pods combined. I tore them apart and siliconed the lights shut to make sure water...

1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

We actually used the stock mounting bolts and did torque them down as much as possible. I don't know if they are Grade-8, but it seems to be working fine so far. There is zero movement or rattling between the plate and the bed or topper. It is robust to say the least.

1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

This is our first time to own a setup like this and so far I really enjoy it. My wife is still on the fence because we are moving from a skoolie conversion with a queen size mattress and heater. What kind of rattle are you expecting? The rack did "rack"(no pun intended) side to side a bit due...

1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

It has been a whirlwind of a couple of weeks, apologies for the lack of updates. We through a lot of work in on the 4Runner before heading off to Expo EAST and didn’t have a ton of time to post progress. We pulled the seats and crappy seat covers to reveal some pretty chewed up seats. We will...

1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

I can't take most of the credit, my father in law is super creative and very mechanically inclined. Not that I wouldn't have figured it out, but it would have taken me a little longer to figure it out. We might have to put foam between the uprights and the cab to avoid contact with the shell...

1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

We have been working on a solution that would allow us to run a roof top tent with two adults in it on the 4Runner without worrying about the fiberglass cracking or having issues. I've seen a lot of rigs running simple baskets that are drilled into the fiberglass and more guys that have run...

1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

Thanks for the info on torsion bars. We are going to drive it as it sits right now and will look at them in the future along with re-gearing. We simply don't have the funds right now. Good to know! I don't think we need 33's. I really like the 31x10.5x15 size for ease of changing tires and...

1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

We upgraded the front shocks with Bilstein 4600's and I would really like to upgrade the torsion bars, but we haven't really gotten to test it with the current setup. We are taking a shakedown trip to Overland Expo EAST next week and we will determine if we need to make changes up front. Do you...

I only came here for the title...I was expecting a bark colored sequoia.

1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

No, just medium CS009 as it comes from OME. We are planning a roof top tent and a lot of gear in the back so I assume I will be fine with the current setup.

1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

Not a lot got done today, mostly tucking things in and laying out the electrical for the dual battery etc... But this is the current state, tailgate is doubling as a work bench and the roll bar is ready to go back in.

1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

The previous springs were aftermarket units with a block lift added, but it had been wheeled hard in it's previous life. I am learning to deal with the extra height, hopefully with full weight in the back we will like it a little more. We used a generic paint from the paint shop. It's similar...

1986 Toyota 4Runner Baja Budget Build

Our spring arrived! Finally, UPS showed up with our driver's side leaf spring after waiting a week for hurricane delays. Getting the springs on was easy after doing the other side, and the shock only gave us a little bit of trouble. A word of caution on OLD MAN EMU springs for the 1st gen...
