I’m following this because I had something similar happen. Same kind of set up. Off-road driving, elevation gain. Turned the car off. Heard a sound coming from the gas tank area. Kept happening for 30 minutes before I decided to start the car. Started r and ran it for 5 minutes and then stopped...
In general, the sport and full sized Monteros have almost nothing in common besides the name. You can do some gear swapping between the two models but they truly are different rigs
I agree with the cross shopping. Gen 1 and 2 montes are similar enough, but gen 3 is a totally different thing, which advantages and disadvantages that make it hard to compare the models at all
I’ll challenge this just a bit. Check out my build thread. The last post talks about how much I’ve spent and what all I’ve done so far. I would say the Montero is an amazing value for the amount of vehicular that you get. https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/rambo-penguins-gen-3-build.193868/
I have some thoughts on this.
The Montero is the poor mans land cruiser. It was the top of the line SUV for Mitsubishi back in the day. They pulled out a lot of stops to make it shine in their line up and compete with other luxury SUVs. Because if that, Monteros are well/over built. They...
Thanks for the hitch tips guys! Armored plate isn’t a bad idea, but the bigger thing is just getting a better departure angle, not just protecting it. I rarely tow things with my gen 3. So I will likely do the flipped hitch thing, or figure out how to incorporate the whole thing into a custom...
Alright time for a little review and evaluation of how this project has gone so far. I will warn you right now, this post will be a lot of writing. I wanted to take some time to look back and examine how this Montero has turned out so far. I wanted to do it now because I am at a pretty good...
Sick pictures man. You’re ride looks great. Getting ready to do a 2” lift on mine, move the hitch up just like yours and complete my sliders. Your truck is great inspiration for me
Hey guys! Wanted to throw my Gen 3 build on here. Thanks for all the support and encouragement! https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/rambo-penguins-gen-3-build.193868/
I believe I did 15 or 20 minutes at 270 degrees. I know it sounds crazy but as long as you don’t let any metal touch the plastic it’s ok. I’d go a little cooler and take more time if I did it again.
On the reseal: same procedure and then I just pressed the two halves together until it had...
Thanks man!
Yeah when I took off the side steps I had to cut the plastic piece. Just grabbed a saw and lopped it off. If you cut it straight you won’t even notice that it’s missing.
Thank you very much! I wish I had started over here a little earlier so there was a little more time between posts, in the future I hope to get some crowd input on future mods.
I apologize that all of those posts came at once. I've been working on this build for 4 months now and am transplanting this tread from another forum. Now i'll be upgrading this one as I go!
Sliders are tricky for a Gen 3 montero because they are not body on frame. Instead the use some kind of reinforced unibody system. It’s plenty strong, but it doesn’t allow for easy attachment of sliders either by welding or bolting to the frame. So I did some research and found out what the...
After some wheeling and exploring I has become evident that I need some body armor. Sliders were my first priority… and then i got a sweet deal on some skid plates :)
For the middle skid plate I went found a T6061 ½” plate that I also got from my local aluminium recycler. In a previous life it...
And back to the roof rack we go! I’m going to be adding a lift in a few weeks so I wanted to make sure I had a high lift with me for emergencies and also for self recovery. I also wanted a shovel easily accessible for digging myself out of sticky situations. High lift is bolted to the rails...
The 2nd of the major mods is a dual battery system. Now, if this is a new topic to you (like it was for me) This can seem very overwhelming. I did a lot of research and found several helpful build threads that answered almost all of my questions. Because there are so many other great threads out...
