This is why I like the Touareg so much as an overlanding platform... everything is heavy duty and extremely overbuilt. I have seen factory roof rack setups on Toyota, Nissan, GM, and other SUVs and they aren't comparable to this system.
The roof itself has a heavy T-bolt channel that is through...
Can you please clarify the concern with the RTT mounting? Note that in the photo the RTT roof crossbar system is not visible, because the traction boards are bolted to the underside of the RTT, and block its view. The RTT may appear to be sitting on the traction boards, but it is not, they are...
Hey guys! Two questions for you:
1) For those of you that carry a full sized spare, how do you deal with the uneven wear issue? I bought a set of 4 used KO2s, that are already 3-4mm shallower in tread (8-9mm) vs the brand new KO2 spare I have (12mm). Should I get my spare shaved down, or is...
I am leaving for my week long Death Valley trip this week, and finished a bunch of little projects to get ready.
First, I found I could install traction boards on the roof by bolting to the bottom of the RTT. Now I just need to figure out an external mount for my hi-lift jack.
Then, I...
I created a community wiki where we can organize all of the key Cayenne/Q7/Touareg offroad tips and advice into one place. Please help me edit it and fill it in with anything useful.

Can anyone that has been to DV in the last few weeks post any info? I'm spending all next week there, curious about current conditions. Saline Valley looks like it's out for me.
My impression is that they assumed the first gen Cayenne and the Touareg T1/T2 are all the same, but they're not. Most of their customers seem to have Cayennes, and they recently updated this design to be much stronger. I contacted them to see what they say about it.
This was certainly true with my first RTT, a generic bi-fold soft shell tent. But with a hard shell iKamper oriented with the shell into the wind, and quiet zippers, it's quieter and more secure in strong winds than any ground tent I've used.
I installed a cheap fold down (instead of side swing) spare tire carrier I found on Amazon for under $100 shipped. It seems like a good alternative to the Eurowise side swing carrier that would be as much as $1800 with shipping and options. It seems more sturdy than expected for the price, and I...
That is terrible if true.... but I can believe it.
I asked GPT-4 why I can't sell the tent, and it basically said it's because it's not camping season yet, which makes sense ?
It's hard for me to beleive iKamper is selling any new tents at all, when I see them sitting on the market for 6+ months, in like new condition, at half new price. I love iKamper- they have the best customer support I've ever experienced, and the tents are fully upgradable (I upgraded a used 1.0...
I have a Tempur-Pedic memory foam topper on my skycamp 1.0 mattress, and it's as comfortable for me now as a regular mattress. I can store it inside if I roll it up at the far back, but it takes all of the storage space, so there is no longer room for blankets, pillows, or sleeping bags.
When I was a kid I used to fantasize about epic road trips... doing the pan-american highway and the Darien gap, etc. and came up on my own with the idea of roof mounted campers for cars... I used to draw designs for them all day long at school and had features like folding hard sides, thin...
Awesome vehicle!!!
Do you have the D24T VW inline 6 turbo diesel engine? If so, I've had a whole bunch of the diesel Volvo models that have these, and I can connect you with a small online community that still has the parts, tools, and knowledge to keep it running. Getting parts and info on...
There is a market of importers that will source and ship Europe only parts to the USA. I have done it, to convert a VW Golf to a 6 speed manual, and it was cheaper than I expected. If you are interested, I would try to find someone online that has done it to figure out what parts are needed...
