Depending on the year, it might have, or be possible to retrofit VWs EDL traction control system, which works awesome. Retrofit is usually just swapping the ABS pump. VW FWD with EDL and a set of Spikes Spider traction aids will do awesome in the snow.
I don't understand the advantage of a fixed leg double bridle. For an even slightly off center pull, the vehicle will be rotating during the recovery, so only one leg will have all of the force at a given time. The extra leg would serve only as a backup to keep the vehicle from rolling away if...
Did people who went up to Cerro Gordo recently make a tour reservation beforehand, or just show up? The website says to make a reservation, but I have been unable to contact them.
AAA makes good maps of mexico, I have the old paper version of it, but don't think they print those anymore. You can download PDFs and get them printed at a kinkos: https://www.aaa.com/mapgallery/
Thank you for all of your feedback and comments.
Well, I just received this in the mail from Eurowise today... an updated version of the VW Touareg/Q7/Cayenne recovery point I showed in the photo earlier. This is a heavy item, with 1" hex bar that fully contacts the equally hefty hex bar on the...
This is a good point, I think you're right, that my recovery points are not safe enough for hard off line pulls, and will think about a plan to deal with that. In current form, I suppose it would be safer, if necessary, to do an off line pull from the winch clip or hitch only. I am also thinking...
I installed the winch today on a Eurowise winch plate. It was a lot harder than I expected... it took me hours to get off and reinstall the radiator clips on the crash bar, because my hands are so big and access so tight. My hands are really torn up. I imagine this would be easy on a non-turbo...
I didn't make or design that, it's a product from Eurowise Offroad. I would say it's the "low end" product, trying to build something that works from inside a factory plastic bumper cover and is still compatible with the factory tow eyes- they also sell a stronger solution that replaces the...
That is a great point. I think common sense applies- a slightly off center pull is probably fine for a really heavy duty tow eye, especially if shimmed to put it in the correct orientation. I think the same applies to the hitch- like you said, check the conditions, and the design. Some hitches...
Not on paved roads anyways. I ran into this guy once that converted his VW Golf to an EV, and made a diesel pusher trailer for long trips: http://www.evalbum.com/304
Apparently, it worked excellent.
Ditto... I've also thought a starter motor that would fully disengage would be ideal- tons of torque for just a few seconds. I love the idea of also using this to carry a 100% complete axle, suspension, etc. for the tow vehicle.
I'm not sure if what I said was clear, but the Topo Topper is the type of camper I was suggesting, not a roof tent:
There are lots of brands that make these. When built to size for a full sized truck like yours, it has as much room as the camper you already have, and full standing height...
This is possibly the first vehicle for an actual expedition on this forum! What about a lightweight pop-top truck camper with a pop-up tent on the top? You might need to reinstall a regular truck bed, but it would be easy to hose out, have full standing height, and a bed that stays isolated from...
+1 - I've often thought about what a part-time electric assist could look like in a simple offroad trailer, with a tiny amount of short duration high torque propulsion just so the trailer could get unstuck or keep from bogging the tow vehicle to a stop on obstacles. Some kind of solid axle with...
A regular 5/8" hitch pin will support some 60,000lbs of shear... it's not going to be the failure point in any recovery situation. I would be very leery of swapping it out for different metals, unless you are an experienced mechanical engineer, especially if it might get used for trailering...
