Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

There are rally coilovers, but those are custom jobs, and they run at least $2k. Not to mention it's a pain getting the builder to actually sit down and build you a system. I tried to get an allwheelsdriven coilover for my Forester, but after promising to get back to me multiple times, but...

    Crossoverlanding Adventures - Repeating History

Last December I went to Death Valley. This January I went skiing and took a few detours. In February I went to rallyschool and camped at Trona Pinnacles. Each of these trips left us planning the next time we would be in the area or partaking in the activity. While is now I managed to condense...

The Mojave to the Eastern Sierra

Cool report! How would you rate Mesquite Canyon? I'm going to be in Ridgecrest for rally school this weekend and I'm thinking of camping there between Saturday and Sunday. However, I won't be able to get on the trail until after nightfall.

2016 Outback: The Traveler - Long Distance Expo Build

Always nice to see another Subaru. Just a note on fuel mileage, by comparison, my 2016 6MT Forester averages around 27 mpg now with bigger (225/70-16) AT tires and a roof basket. The tires took out about 2 mpg and the roof rack another 2 mpg. It used to be a hair above 30 mpg stock.

Crossoverlanding Adventures - To Lake Tahoe and Back Again

58 looked like a total mess when I passed by 58 going down 14. Completely backed up and full of trucks parked on the side.

Crossoverlanding Adventures - To Lake Tahoe and Back Again

The next morning brought even more snow. As much as I wanted to spend a bit more time in Lake Tahoe, I had a long drive ahead of me in order to get home. So, after breakfast, it was time to hit the long road for the second time in three days. And yes, my car was parked on a mound of snow. Of...

Crossoverlanding Adventures - To Lake Tahoe and Back Again

A few friends and I had planned a trip to Lake Tahoe for the end of January. This was never really a car trip; it was supposed to be for hanging out and having fun on the slopes. However, if you tell me to go on a trip to somewhere, I’m going to at least try to get some automotive related fun...

    2015 Outback tire question

I think you need to downsize to 16" wheels to find a decent size, but I just got the Hankook Dynapro AT-Ms (225/70-16 size) and they were awesome in the snow while I was up in Tahoe. Portions of 395 were pure snow and I was cruising at 50 mph, with the car feeling completely in control and...

    Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10

Had them on snow over the weekend. Was cruising at 50 mph on packed snow and they felt rock solid and stable. So they're definitely good for the winter. They also did pretty well in limited amounts of mud and some easy gravel, but I'm not yet ready to make any proclamations on that front yet.

    California Highway 395

Went to and from Tahoe this past weekend, taking 395. Great road and a bit of everything, including some hair raising environmental conditions. Had a blast. Caltrans basically stopped plowing between 120 and 203 and I got a road of pure snow. Had so much fun.

    Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10

Please don't take this personally, but please specify which Dynapros were on the car. A quick search of TireRack shows 6 different tires with the DynaPro label and I'm sure their construction varies greatly from model to model. Tires are so different from model to model that making a...

    Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10

I picked up a set of 225/70-16 ATMs for use with my 16" Braid wheels. It seems that people that have run Dynapros and other tires generally compare the Dynapros favorably. However, they still seem to be rather rare tires. I'll be curious to see how they work in the coming days.

Crossoverlanding Adventures - Death Valley, Hunter Mountains, and Saline Valley

That washboard was the worst part of that trip. I wish we had time to check out Lost Burro mine though. Next time I guess. And yes, an air pad is on my shopping list. I don't think the sleeping platform will become a reality for awhile yet. So many things to do for the Forester...

Crossoverlanding Adventures - Death Valley, Hunter Mountains, and Saline Valley

We actually discussed that. We figured Subaru would either use our pictures for advertising or void our warranties. :D Ironically, Subaru of North America has an office a floor above my office.

Crossoverlanding Adventures - Death Valley, Hunter Mountains, and Saline Valley

We were running about 25 psi for normal trails and 20 psi on the washboard. I'm sure we could go lower, but were being a bit cautious due to a lack of confidence in the street tires. Since the Subarus are so light, I'm sure they can take 15 psi easily.

Crossoverlanding Adventures - Death Valley, Hunter Mountains, and Saline Valley

We woke up to a clear, snow covered, and very cold morning. Since we had three people, two of us slept in the Forester while the remaining person slept in the Crosstrek. The Forester was long enough that it could fit two people comfortably, both with their feet straight down. While the wind...
