    Fording Depth vs. Snorkel Height

It doesn't take much water to hydrolock a motor. The quantity of water needed to lock up a motor would be dependent on its combustion chamber volume. For instance, if a 1/4 cup of water reached any given cylinder in a Jeep 4.0l it would hydrolock. A snorkel is an effective way to move the air...

    wrangler vs cherokee

Oh no, the MJ has a much bigger 'cool' factor than the XJ. Then again, I may be a little biased ;) The XJ is a great vehicle and nice units can be found within any budget. You can do anything to a XJ you can dream up. Any solid axle Jeep platform will have a good aftermarket and support following.

    wrangler vs cherokee

The XJ has just as much aftermarket support as the TJ, just fewer variations. The front suspension of the XJ is also nearly identical to the TJ. Any critical parts can be replaced with parts from a TJ. Both a TJ and XJ would not be drivable for awhile if you are ripping skid plates off of them...

Android Head Units for mapping, OBD, music etc?

Rando - Thanks for the info. I am surprised the Android OS allows app data to be accessed via a thumb drive. If Backcountry Navigator can read and write to a thumb drive, that would eliminate one more step to my mapping sequence. Awesome!

Android Head Units for mapping, OBD, music etc?

Thanks for the informative thread. This Android unit might be what I need, but I have a couple of concerns. - Does it have an FM radio out of the box? - Is there an SD card slot that could be used to store and use Backcountry Navigator maps on? Is it accessible when the unit is installed? I...

    TJs with 35s???

I am running a 1" body lift with 3" springs to clear 35's. Currie trackbars, JKS disconnects, Nth springs, Bilstein shocks, Clayton shock shifters, Rokmen control arms, Tom Woods driveshafts, 5.13 gears, Vanco brakes, and alloy axle shafts. In hindsight even though it is properly set up for...

    Question for Cruiser/LX470 owners

Just bought my first 100 series from the original owner. It's a 1999 with 247k miles. Toyota records show timing belt done at 188k. Short of rebuilding some of the front suspension/steering, replacing the heater hose T's, replacing the tires and cleaning the interior it needed nothing. I am...

Do you check or rent skis?

If you love your skis, bring them along. Rentals just won't do unless you are adventurous and pay extra for demos. Although I will admit, I have never needed to check skis on an airline.

    Mount Antero, CO Sep-2015

The trail head for the road up Mt. Antero is about 20 minutes southwest of Buena Vista, so about 2 hours from the Springs. This road is by far one of my favorite 'out and back' routes in Colorado. The last part of the climb to the top isn't for the faint of heart though...steep, loose and narrow.

LA, Denver, Alaska, Inuvik and back - 5 months with a Land Cruiser FZJ80 (Pictures!)

Nice report. What a great trip to take with your dad. I can't wait to follow the rest of your trip and commentary. I was in Ouray a couple of weeks before you. My wife and I were the last ones to go over Cinnamon Pass in our Jeep before 24" of snow fell.

    Going Price on 100 Series/LX470?

It's interesting to see the varied prices of a 100 series across the country. I've been shopping for a couple of months now, primarily the Kansas City, Dallas and Denver/CO Springs markets. The KC market puts a 98-02 at $10k with 150k miles, and close to $20k for a lower mileage 03+. I have also...

    Why we buy Toyotas

That 90 XJ was actually an AMC ;) I've been a Jeep guy my whole life, but I can nod with approval at that video. This past October my wife and I took a long weekend drive to Ouray to soak up the fall color. We drove our 06 Grand Cherokee which we had for 3 dependable years, only needing a...

    Expedition Overland - 2015 Season

I want to thank the XO crew for putting together another great season. My favorite part of the expedition was when the young Mayan girl gave the 'thumbs up' after her surgery. I was overcome with emotion at that point. It was amazing how you were able to capture the raw emotion in that isolated...

1986 Comanche | Project Heavy Four

This years Colorado trip was unlike any other. The group of Kansans that usually embark on the adventure to Colorado was reduced by two experienced guys and replaced with two who had never wheeled the Rockies. This was also the first time I left my Rubicon at home and choose to drive my rusty...

    Black Bear and Lockers

Are you sure about that? I have been following the Sheriff's story pretty close and have yet to see anything about the road actually being closed....at this point. Black Bear is my favorite road in the San Juans. The San Miguel county website indicates the road is open as well...

1986 Comanche | Project Heavy Four

I took this truck to Colorado over the weekend of the 4th. It ran great and even rode smoother than my TJ on the trails. It did struggle starting above 11,000' but never failed to do so. Here I am on Mt. Antero at 13,200'. I did not climb to the very top as a thunderstorm was rolling in...
