Honestly the Nissan is about half the build strength of the Montero. And everyone I've ever known to have an xterra has transmission issues. Other than that they are well supported and perform decent. IMO a gen2/2.5 with rear diff lock is a great all around vehicle for what you are describing...
Use an aluminum gm ls6 and 6 speed auto gearbox. Mpg will likely be low 20's and it will actually go. Compared to the 4.6, the td5 has a tiny bit more initial torque then it's a turd.

My 06 has 202k miles on it. I would absolutely get a 03-06 limited. You can swap the lsd and lower gears if you want.

Fwiw gen 2.5 comes with a body lift from the factory. Are you sure it isn't that one? I can't remember how tall it is though.

I think it has a lock inhibit if the drivers door is open too. Not sure I would have to go through the fsm. Another possibility is the central locking unit or whatever it's called being bad.

Car seat fits very well in these and still allow the front seats to move back most of the way.
And you'd be suprised how much stuff goes with a baby. We have 2 gen3's and they work well for that. Plus you can neglect it and it will still run.
You can turn it off with the switch. I think it still leaves on the stability control but in the wet I can slide it all over spinning the tires.
