From the link Lynn posted: Here in the land of single digit humidity there are days when everything I touch gives a zap.

    Jerry can - bad idea?

I've carried anywhere from 1 to 3 NATO gas cans inside my Cherokee. It doesn't matter if they are full or empty, I NEVER have had even a whiff of gasoline. This has been in 100*+ heat, elevations up to 12,000 feet, for weeks at a time. I feel safer with them inside where they are protected by...

    XJ/MJ Concerns

Is there anything else I should plate or reinforce? I was hoping I had already exposed all of the weaknesses found in the Cherokee platform.

Sounds good... where do you live? I'm bringing my Jeep over so you can weld in some T&T frame stiffeners and fix this: :D

Yes, Maria pointed them out to me otherwise I would have missed them. I think we camped further down canyon from where you did. We set up the tent right next to the cattle guard, almost at the bottom of the canyon. Next time I think we'll camp right below the dino tracks in this alcove...

    XJ/MJ Concerns

Wow, beefy! Did you fab up the 1/4 sliders yourself, John? Are you going to put tubes at the roofline too? That area of a Cherokee gets a substantial amount of abuse due to the soft front coil/stiff rear leaf suspension design.

It took about 3 years for my Cherokee to start cracking... ;) BTW, I really like your rocker protection!

    XJ/MJ Concerns

Actually I am careful to not abuse my Cherokee. What you are seeing is 6 years cumulative effect of hard off road use. Now my buddy John is another story- this is 2 years of use, he trailers his Jeep everywhere:

    XJ/MJ Concerns

My Cherokee is a 1997 with 170,000 miles and I have had/am having unibody issues. It has been on 33's and wheeled regularly since June of 2001... The first problem is also the most common- the "frame rail" below the steering box develops a crack and the laminated lower sheetmetal layers...

Tim, I'll bet you and I are the only people who have camped in that canyon this year, one right after the other no less! Dang, it looks like we drove right by that place. I'll definately stop and look around next time. Kurt, have you been to Alstrom Point before? Does Grand Bench have anything...

Tim and Kurt, thanks for sharing your writeups! This was an orientation trip for another trip I am taking some friends on in October, thanks for the ideas. Tim, too bad we didn't meet. We went down and up Left Hand Collet Sunday afternoon/Monday morning. When did you go through? Kurt, I have...

    Grand Staircase-Escalant National Monument

After indulging in Jurassic Park fantasies we made the long, bumpy but colorful drive over the Kaiparowits Plateau to Lake Powell. Talk about a wide variety of terrain! After driving the better part of the day we found our reward: Alstrom Point. The rest of the afternoon passed...

    Grand Staircase-Escalant National Monument

Believing the road report to be correct we took Smokey Mountain Road out of Escalante, instead of Hole in the Rock as originally intended. Another of those lovely road signs: ...and a big surprise as we headed down Left Hand Collet: Fresh tracks of a front end loader that had cleared the...

    Grand Staircase-Escalant National Monument

Ever since I first visited this place with my Volkswagen Vanagon I have wanted to return with something that will stray a little farther off the beaten path. That time came this Memorial Day Weekend. My Sweetie and I had 4 days off and a Jeep loaded with camping gear to go with an ambitious list...
