Thanks for the info. I am exploring the idea of a new truck and fuel range is one of my bigger concerns. 400 miles is about 100 more per tank than my power wagon gets.
You cant really beat old diesels if you want diesel. In my mind, the pro of having a warranty on a new diesel isn't that huge since i would constantly worry about emissions issues from some of the horror stories I've heard from people. I like having a newer vehicle, and i like having a warranty...
Id get the ovrlnd, load up the gear and go scale it. Id think you would be okay with 1400 payload. If not, buy the trailer too. You could cut your losses and buy a new pickup, but honestly i am an advocate for an overland trailer. I have a boreas xt and having my camp rig seperate from my truck...
I totally get your reservations about ramping it uo there. I have thought about a hitch mounted carrier, sounds like there's no noticeable negative effect.

Drove by it last week. Still listed online. I won't do business with them as they jerked me around in the past but looks like maybe a fair price.
My personal rig is a 2018 power wagon and my work vehicle is a gas f250 supercab. They both get the job done, but i like driving the power wagon. So, drive them and buy what you like!
As far as payload, i follow the door sticker like i follow speed limits. I've had my PW overloaded like i have...
Our trailer has a lock n roll hitch too so pretty uncommon for someone to have the other end. Although hitch lock or not someone could pretty easily rig up to it and take off. Oh well.
A wheel lock wouldn't be a bad idea. Usually where we are camping there isnt a lot of people, and we have just hoped they arent theives and also prepared to steal a trailer. Break into it and steal our gear? Much more likely.
Okay but they're just not being asked to do what full size diesels are, because they cant. Its like a honda civic and a Ferrari. You can drive fast in one, and really fast in the other. One will last longer, the other wont.
