Velcro sneakers made its first voyage down to the alignment shop on Friday. Got it back Monday. Drove it a few miles today. Still needs exhaust, but it feels good! Can someone let me know if the pics in post 37 on this page are showing? I just opened a Flickr account. If it works I'll redo all...
Hey Chris - for this 5.4 exhaust did you basically leave the passenger side intact, then cut up the driver side reusing the cats, crossing over the tranny, hanging below the pass side then join the two with a wye just before the muffler?
Thanks
Steve
Pulled the tank to shorten and tranny to replace output shaft and tail housing. Rebuilding the 4r75E this weekend. Will order driveshafts tomorrow. Coming along...
Here's why you have to pull the tranny on a 4r70/4r75: One on the left is the 2wd output shaft. It is the very first thing...
Having lived in both a Sportsmobile and VW Westy, I can tell you that the Westy has far more headroom with the top down than the SMB does. Would love to see more headroom for stealth camping.
Sorry to hear that. I was kind of paranoid about having a bent axle as well. How did you determine it was bent? I couldn't figure out a reliable way to do that with the front axle. Hopefully the salvage yard will treat you right.
Part 1 mostly completed. MG's kit is pretty simple and the quality is fantastic, including some very thoughtful designs that make it easy to install.
Working alone except for placement of the axle, I've probably spent 10 hours on it. Michael was super helpful with timely responses to questions...
OK. No time to start like the present. Made a cuppa then:
In two coffees and 2.5 hours I had the suspension off. I have more pics of the process, but nothing too exciting. Lunch, then the cutting and drilling begins.
Front Axle
My front axle is a Dana 60 out of a 2013 F250. Yes, it does have massive brakes! I do plan a locker for the future, but in the name of domestic tranquility I'll do that another time. I did have one big splurge though. Not really sure that it was the best idea, but it was easy enough...
Yeah - sorry. I meant to write that up. Chris at UJOR was so good about helping me when I was going to do a full UJOR swap. When MG's kit came on the market and it seemed to fit my needs a bit better, Chris was STILL helpful in figuring out what I needed. I ordered everything I could from Chris...
collecting parts
When I finally decided upon a van, I was originally going to do a UJOR swap. Having an FZJ80 (lots of flex) and a Syncro Westy (no flex), it seemed like a leaf spring conversion was the way to go. After thinking a bit more critically about how I would use this (17000 miles per...
When I drove it home a few months ago my wife said "Nice old man van!" Nothing screams retiree (or middle aged nurse) like white velcro sneakers. I'm not *quite* a retiree yet. I should have my AARP card within a year though! I'm hoping the van looks a little bit cooler once the swap is done.
