wiring fixed and deployed solar to one controller

if anyone has any suggestions on how to mount/manage the 50w flexibles as a portable solution (solar suitcase or otherwise) please let me know. I am pretty much making it up. Looking primarily for the the following attributes: 1. protect panels during transport 2. protect panels from ground...

wiring fixed and deployed solar to one controller

Pat, Somehow I missed that. $40 is well worth the time and materials it would take me to build and mount a weatherproof enclosure on the tongue near the battery box. And I am already familiar with the bluetooth app from the smart solar controller and the bmv 712 battery monitor. Thanks for...

wiring fixed and deployed solar to one controller

My controller does not have remote temp sensor so I’m trying to find a way to mount it on the tongue near the battery pack. Not sure how much difference it makes though. Inside would be easier for sure. It was a pain mounting the shunt and fuse box under the trailer.

wiring fixed and deployed solar to one controller

Dwh, Thanks. I was Comtemplating something like that. For now I think I’ll get the flexible up top. Get the controller mounted somewhere (still figuring out where, it’s a pop up trailer), and use the suitcase I have. Then I can research making my own lightweight suitcase.

wiring fixed and deployed solar to one controller

Here is a photo of the suitcase panel specs. Honestly I’m keeping it because I have it but damn is it heavy. I’m considering flexible options for the second panel because I need to limit weight on the trailer roof. So for me weight is a priority consideration. Even over efficiency. Thanks for...

wiring fixed and deployed solar to one controller

Dread, Thanks for your input. I see the cc you are recommending is mppt. If I’m using the victron mppt for the rooftop does the other controller connected to the same battery need to be mppt as well? Asking because that seems like a nicer cc than I would have picked up to replace the cheap...

wiring fixed and deployed solar to one controller

Dwh, thanks. It’s the “Y out” part I’m struggling with. If I put an actual Y at the solar input of the controller with one input into the controller and two sets of wires on the other side I could leave the roof mounted panel connected all the time, and just plug in the portable as needed. But...

wiring fixed and deployed solar to one controller

Thanks dwh. Similar panels are definitely available. I’m trying to figure out how to wire it so that I can conveniently switch back and forth between the different panels as needed. The controller is not going to be in a very convenient location to be regularly accessing it.

wiring fixed and deployed solar to one controller

Hi all, I am looking to upgrade my solar on my trailer. I have been using a renogy 100w suitcase for a few years, but the viewstar controller just failed on me. 100 watts has been ok but limiting in some situations. I want to upgrade to a roof mounted panel and keep my 100w solar suitcase for...

    AA/AAA battery charger

Jonyjoe, For that opus charger, do you need anything special to run it off 12v? Or just find any plug That fits th charger, feed it 12v, and you are good to go?

Solar Controller Negative connection on Trailer Chassis?

dwh, Thanks for the reply. As far as i know the controller and panels are negative ground. I will confirm. That would make my life easy. I can run the controller positive lead to the battery terminal and the negative to the trailer chassis, where the rest of the DC negative returns are. As...

Solar Controller Negative connection on Trailer Chassis?

SoCal, That is definitely an option. I am hoping to avoid adding additional connections to the shunt as I am still experimenting and want to avoid unnecessary connections at the point of the shunt. Based on what dwh says, I think I am in the clear to connect the negative lead from controller...

Solar Controller Negative connection on Trailer Chassis?

the diagram does indicate the negative lead connecting to the battery terminal. Hence my question. The only other information in the manual (Renogy Viewstar PWM 10 amp) indicates grounding is to "common ground"

Solar Controller Negative connection on Trailer Chassis?

calicamper, my issue is that if i connect the solar controller negative lead to the battery (as in your setup) it will bypass the shunt and thus the battery monitor. I am trying to figure out if there is any reason I cannot connect the negative lead of controller directly to the chassis, where...

Solar Controller Negative connection on Trailer Chassis?

Hi All, My new battery monitor utilizes a shunt on the negative battery terminal and requires that all connections to the negative terminal be through the shunt. The way I am wiring the shunt in a weatherproof box makes access somewhat inconvenient. Instead of wiring additional leads to the...

trying to understand battery capacity terminology

My 12v battery ended up being a little iffy, so I went ahead and purchased two 6v GC2 deep cell batteries. After reviewing their charging profile it looks like my charger is a good match for the batteries. The batteries are black box (no label) trojans sold by my local battery shop. Rated 200...

Need Help Planning Volt/Amp Meter Install

Thanks Verkstad I’ll look into some PVC enclosures. Appreciate the suggestion. Good to know I can attach the fridge negative to the system side of the shunt. I’d like to keep it as simple as possible.

Need Help Planning Volt/Amp Meter Install

Hi folks. We picked up a pop up tent and looks like we will be spending more time in it. I have decided I want a decent monitor for my batteries (2x 6v) and am going to install a shunt style monitor. Ill be getting something rather small because the fridge is the biggest draw. I am new to...
