"Merit" connectors, good info. This type of connector has been around for many years but I never knew what to call them. This type connector was common in German military vehicles such as the Unimog 404 radio communications trucks from the 60's! Their usage was at 24 vdc. I use a bunch of...
Sure you can get a CB antenna to fit an NMO mount. Look at a good quality antenna company like a Larsen, model NMO 27. You can buy a spare whippy whip for the same base and coil and tune it to 10 meters, getting two bands for a few dollars more. Technician licensees can operate 10m 28.300...
Oh Oh, HRO, you are hooked. There's no turning back now LOL.
Mounting the 2m antenna on a metal plate is a good engineering solution to get a ground plane. You got good advice. You could mount a CB antenna on another NMO mount on the same plate. I have a CB ant and 2m ant within 2 feet of...
Hi UCS308,
I took 2 meters and HF with me on an Alaska trip a few years ago, driving both directions. I used the HF but hardly used the 2m. Cell phone coverage was better than 2 meter coverage for emergency use! On the road, I found more CB activity than ham activity so a cheap CB with mag...
Many of us have that same burr. The burr is a continued loosening of specs for cheap radios in exchange for certification fees. All about the $$$. The result will be poor performance which the owner simply lives with in exchange for a cheap price. But reduced performance specs also effect...
Rubicon4URE, did you pull a switch-er-roo on us? The Jeep in your first picture and this last picture "bought me a flat fender" aren't the same. Hope that is the case because an unmolested MB Willys as you described in the early post would be shamed by being 'upgraded', when lots of people...
Does anyone else find the descriptions to be vague as to transmit coverage? One review says that Amateur 2m is receive only yet the other says the cross band works, implying ham band transmit on 2m and 70cm.
The description says "It can receive on UHF (400-520MHz), VHF (136-174MHz), Aircraft...
You will be surprised how many people want the answer to this question :-) If there is an ex-military vehicle that does not behave like an ex-military vehicle, it's the Unimog. A Unimog is unique, IMHO.
Are you the Unimog type? Is the next question "how can I make it go faster"? If so...
Copper is easy to form so just use a tapered punch and a loose vise to enlarge the hole. No metal is removed so current capacity does not drop. Don't clamp the vise on anything, just use it as a backup for supporting the terminal. The hole gets bigger as you drive the punch down through the...
Nice tools you made! A 404 radio truck really is a great camping rig. My wife and I used one for 10 years until she decided she was too old to climb in and out, ha ha.
You could probably slow down just slightly more and never have to stop. An overall lube temp of 210F is not a problem with...
Great project! More people need to think of ways to get the job done without breaking the bank. You will be more comfortable than many RTT's and other setups that cost ten times more.

How about building a limb riser that's a dipole on 2 m? Or even a 1/4 wave worked against ground? A piece of cable for a limb riser could be broken up to resonant length by egg insulators.

This is great coverage here. Thanks Expedition4x4! My grand son Logan is in that STEM school and in the ham club. He was unable to go to the launch.
EOSS is a great group. I was honored to participate while living in Littleton, EOSS flights 1 through about 150. It was more fun before APRS...
I think this is a grand idea. Sure, the Unimog 406 model is not a fast vehicle but it will maintain 45 mph. The OM-352 engine is made to run wide open all day if needed.
Most rural area back roads, back east for sure, are speed limited to 40-45 mph anyway. I cruise around in a 406 just for...
This is what I use:

This Rigrunner distributes power to USB devices, and you can even hook up your HF, VHF, UHF, CB, whatever.

Alaskan Campers has always been responsive to me. My Alaskan Camper is a 1970 and they still help with maintenance parts!
If you want to see what the people at Alaskan can build, one good example is at...
On a level road the radio truck was comfortable at around 50 mph and will run all day at that speed. Average speed is lower, of course, and I probably run 45 mph most of the time. Speed will drop with a headwind or even slight uphill. With a downhill it'll reach max specified speed (96 kph)...
Price can vary by many fold depending on condition, as you indicated. Rust is a big thing. Beware of "rustfree" Unimogs where the previous owner "restored" the truck. Expect to find rust under body filler! I know of one 'rust free' 404 bought for a high price a few years ago that now has...
