Roof Top Tent: Take me to school

I would think carefully about having a rack, tent, recovery gear and fuel on the roof. That is a lot of load and will definitely screw with you COG. Light stuff up top, heavy stuff down below...

    National Luna

I used an Engel 45 for many years and it never failed to work as advertised. However, I did not like the interior liner - plastic that would easily stain. Cost new was about $700 ten years ago. I bought a National Luna fridge/freezer (separate freezer compartment) that has a stainless steel...

    RTTs and fuel economy

We have some data on this subject. As Frenchy pointed out, there are a number of variables. - Horsepower/torque of the vehicle - Aerodynamics of the roof tent - hardshell vs. folding tent, the difference is significant - Aerodynamics of the vehicle - windshield slope, etc. - Weight of the tent...

    RR P38 4.6

I have been looking for a '95 RRC LWB, but found a '02 P38 LWB with a new 4.6 and <70K total miles locally. Other than the air suspension and rust, what should I look for? Want a good backcountry driver, but not going to bash it through the rocks ;-) Thanks, Mike S

Adding a vent to a fiberglass topper/shell roof?

I added a vent to my ARE shell. I used a 6" 12V marine bilge fan and topped it with a clam shell vent cover. Took about 45 minutes once I convinced myself to cut a hole in the shell.

Newbie planning to get RTT for BMW X5

I doubt that it will work with a JB tent. Sorry.

    Range Rover Classic

Thank you all for your comments and insight. I have owned multiple Landcruisers since 1973, but have always like the RRC LWB in classic RR colors. I can afford to find a good one, and am prepared to build a good 4.6, install the gear drive TC, shocks, etc. I need a stylish 'expedition' vehicle...

Newbie planning to get RTT for BMW X5

Understand. You should look at the Air Top or Maggiolina - they have an optional changing room that attaches to the upper edge of the tent, have a full door, window, insect screens, and provide access to the and the vehicle from inside the changing room Should be enough room for two dog crates...

    Identifying old camping gear-help

Do your homework on fabrics before you buy. Canvas may not be the best choice for an RTT.

Newbie planning to get RTT for BMW X5

Are you thinking of the side tent for the dogs? I travel with my bird dogs frequently and they stay in their kennels or on a stake-out when not released to run.

    RTT for my Cayenne

Mike -- Do the posters on that BBS you mentioned have RTTs on their vehicles? We have fitted nearly 3,000 tents on all types of vehicles and NEVER had one dent or damage the roof due to tent or occupant weight. The Thule weight limits are total dynamic load limits - more about braking, handling...

The screens can be repaired of course by using tape or patches. Note, however, they the screens are connected to the tent at the top by a 'hook and loop' strip. They can very easily be removed and replaced - and yes, we do have replacement screens. It's the real world and stuff happens.

    Power Management with Fridge

I turn my fridge off at night. Ambient air temp is lower, and you will not be opening and closing it when you are asleep. Turn it back on first thing in the AM. On long trips, I have left my Engel 45 on constantly when using it as a freezer - it never discharged my truck batteries any...
