Many of our customers (over 100 or more) have fitted tents to the tops of campers shells and. I have used tents on the standard ARE shell with a Yakima track system on my F350 with zero problems and no flexing at all.
I do not think you need to add bracing inside the shell to support the tent...
No, most customers tell us there is zero to 1-1/2 MPG decrease in MPG. On a few vehicles (older Cherokees, of instance) this is an actual INCREASE in MPG. It is a variable thing that is difficult to estimate.

Brian, hard to make a better choice than a light(er) weight 30-'06 with modest variable scope - Leupold, of course. I would prefer a model 70 or Mauser, but the Remington 700 is an excellent rifle. I owned one in 30-'06 for years. A good elk rifle.
