I think the above answers cover it. How hard will it be being alone with yourself? Will you end up at restaurants/bars/etc to kill time and be social costing you your savings.
I have seen milk crate and wood top platforms work great for folks, so no concern on woodworking skills!
Your cloths...
I have heard good things about Epson flat bed scanners for film and slides - I do not know which ones however - maybe - https://www.amazon.com/Epson-Perfection-Negative-Document-Scanner/dp/B002OEBMRU
Just a warning. This can be a popular (loud) spot on weekends and warmer weather. It is also used as a boat (kayak) launch. It is a pretty spot when quiet!
That is a perfect explanation. SO the next step is to ask what you are trying to capture:
Motion - fast or slow
How much in focus - this can change with focal length, but larger number f stop, more in focus
How much light is there? Slower shutter means any motion in picture might be blurred...
They are heavy! I think a 250 would be fine. From what I see, if you get it for $1k and it is in as nice a condition as it appears, that is a good deal. They are not as popular as the M101
