It can be as deep as you want it to be. If you just do the hg and miscellaneous PM (hoses, belts, leaky items, etc) then less than 2k. If you want to mod it and make it pristine, 20k...
I know you said it isn't an option, but selling the f-150 and keeping the cruisers is the smartest option. Put the 80 in the shop and pay somebody to do the necessary things for it to be on the road. Sell the f150, pay off the work on the 80 and live happily ever after...
I also wouldn't worry about the lockers--I have had 3--a 93 and a 94 with lockers and my 97 without lockers. I run an aussie in the back of the 97 and have not yet wished that I had the front locker again. The lockers were nice, but they can be a bit finicky and need to be exercised regularly...
No sure you can call the 93 the "best" year for an 80, but there is certainly nothing wrong with them. I'd make that trip in a heartbeat--if the HG was done, most of the little stuff that gives you headaches will have been done also. The price is a bit steep, but if you look at the cost of new...
Looks good--I'd take a look at that front diff and swap in an ARB locker. The early 2 pinion front diffs are pretty fragile and there really isn't an easy way of making them strong other than adding the ARB locker--you may be able to swap in a later 4 pinion diff, but I can't speak to the...
Straps, first aid kit, socket set, bungee cords, oil, hitch, etc. I need to go back through and re-organize it as I think I can fit in a tool kit with everything I "need" and remove the tool box from behind the seat.

Not the wagongear model--still a solid product though...
A 97 FZJ80 will need a front end service, "maybe" a head gasket, and "maybe" starter contacts. They are different rigs with different advantages and disadvantages but a well(or poorly) maintained 80 is no more or less expensive to sort out than a similarly maintained 100.
You might rethink the factory locked axles. The rears tend to twist the splines when they break (usually wheeling hard with 37" or bigger tires). This prevents you from removing the broken axle shaft and requires you to cut the housing open to cut out the shafts. The process usually trashes...
The only mileage consideration south of 200k is whether the timing belt has been done and when it was done in relation to current miles. For example: 180k truck with timing belt just done for the second time is better than a 130k truck that has never had it done. If you can do the work...
This only tells part of the story. The center diff lock gives the AWD systems a "direct connection" just the same as shifting into 4wd would do on a part time system. Land cruisers have been AWD since 1991 and they can "Rock Crawl" just fine.
The stability control on all of the rigs...
So, being out in the boonies makes one safe? There are plenty of documented violent encounters with critters of the 4 legged and 2 legged variety while out in the woods. If you go out camping in the backcountry, you probably won't have a problem, but if you do, it pays to be prepared...
