Hi folks,
I am planning on buying a cheapish vintage road bike to use for training and potentially touring. I currently ride a steel frame LeMond Zurich and used to have a Lemond Nevada City and an old welded frame Trek. I have always wanted a decent lugged frame with a bit of chrome--here...
Swaybar disconnects will not net you as much on that suspension set up as on others. The axle binds due to the 4 points of contact between the arms and the housing. Due to the requirement for an axle to rotate when it moves up or down, this set up will never flex well. The only solutions to...
Windshield frame definely needs some work...looks like montana from the pics. I would try to find one without rust, but that rust appears fixable. Look for more rust around the rear window/rear hatch as well. It appears to not have lockers, but I can't tell for sure. If that is snow induced...
Looks like you have the standard front end binding issues. If you pull one of your front control arm bolts and replace it with a hitch pin, it will drive the same on the road, but pulling it at the trailhead will free up the front end significantly.
As seen here on a stock 80 front end.
I would pass unless your minivan is a beater. Coarse spine birfs, front drum brakes with no auto-adjuster plus everything else.... If you do buy it, make sure to drive in 4 hi at at least 25 mph--I didn't on my old SBC Fj-55 and only later found out that it vibrated horribly in 4H when...
I'll be back before may--hopefully. The front end rebuild is pretty straightforward. Most people goof up the spindle bushing lube, but it is easy over all.
Texas is flat... don't need gears there anyway.
Both axle services are easily done on the cheap yourself. Aussie locker is easy to do youself. There are gear shops in San antonio--when you get there, pull the thirds and bring them into the shop for regear--should be less than 1k doing it that...
BTW, that is me under the lx pulling his driveshaft so we could get back to the trailhead--ended up having to pull his drive flanges as well to get him back home.
Kurt,
While the two pinion diffs are much more prone, I think that the 4 pinion is far from immune to this. The link is to an album of me and a couple other guys at RC. The last 3 videos at the bottom are a pretty tame (but steep) hill climb. We all failed in the videos, but I made it up the...
Passenger side, front and back--I have one on the front now, but it is slightly off color.
SD trux is right near the base and does good work--if they won't do gears, I am sure they could recommend a good local gear shop....

The new ford is tempting--the Afghans use them a lot with good results. They don't hold up well to IEDs but beyond that they pose a pretty serious threat to the Hilux. Factory roll bar, steel bumper, fender protection, sliders, and rear bumper Jerry can holders....
Having a grand old time!
As far as what to put in the hitch rack, whatever you wanted I suppose. The aluminum rack from HF fits a cooler pretty well and hanging it off the tire carrier would keep it away from the rocks. With 5 kids I don't have as much interior room as the rest of you...
