    PLB (Personal locating beacon)

Your reasons for preferring a PLB are absolutely valid. PLBs are also much more powerful (5W vs ~.5W) than the SPOT/inReach devices, though that seems to make little, if any, difference with today's technology. Yes, the subscription devices are more expensive. I keep my Garmin Explorer+...

    PLB (Personal locating beacon)

To expand on the stats theme, the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center, the recipient of emergency messages for SPOT and inReach, has handled more 49,000 incidents since it was created in 2007. That averages out to over 4000 per year, about 4 times the rate of PLB...

    PLB (Personal locating beacon)

Subscription-free PLBs may be the cheapest option for rescue by satellite, but as a member of one of the busiest SAR groups in the U.S., I highly recommend a device that allows 2-way communication with rescuers. Both SPOT and Garmin now produce such devices. If we receive a distress signal...

    ArkPak + Fridge Problem?

I would have to say that since the ArkPak website states the 730 is "compatible with Lithium LiFePO4 batteries", there is a specific setting in the 730 for that battery type, and quite a few people have been using LiFePO4 batteries without issue in the 730, that the issue is resolved.

    ArkPak + Fridge Problem?

Not true. The 730 was designed for use with LiFePO4 batteries and has a setting specifically for that battery type. I've had the 730 for 3 years and switched about a year ago to the same battery the OP is using. The first battery I got from Battle Born was defective, but the second has been...

    Jeep J8 USA Buying Options?

Funny...I thought this was an expedition forum rather than a rock crawling forum. In my 44 years of living in Moab, I've seen trail obstacles gradually become more important than the trail's destination. Too bad. Over the years, I've seen most of Moab's trails get ripped to shreds by rock...

    Jeep J8 USA Buying Options?

From everything I've read, there were slightly less than 28,000 (27,792) CJ-8s produced. I bought mine brand new in 1982 and explored Moab's many trails for 14 years before selling it in 1996. It was completely stock except for an add-a-leaf lift and went everywhere I pointed it with no...

Pics - iPad mounted using Ram Mount Tough Wedge

I've been using a Tough Wedge (without the expansion pouch) with an iPad Mini for nearly a year. It's very solid in my GMC Canyon. I use 2 of the 6" arms to get the iPad exactly where I want it.

Ark Pak - Questions and Queries

One month after Battle Born promised to ship a new battery to me to replace the apparently defective one I received last Spring, it finally arrived. Sean at Battle Born blamed the delay on "staffing changes." Hopefully this battery will work without issue in the ArkPak.

Ark Pak - Questions and Queries

I haven't read the warranty page and your speculation is wrong. Battle Born isn't a massive company with convoluted communication procedures between departments...which I see as a great reason for dealing with them. When I spoke with them on the phone on Jan. 24, they initially said they would...

Ark Pak - Questions and Queries

I spoke with them on the phone over 2 weeks ago about the problem. That is when they told me they would send a new battery. They have not. No response to emails asking for a tracking number or shipping date since. How I choose to contact them is irrelevant. The bottom line is that they...

Ark Pak - Questions and Queries

Not yet and I don't need to be lectured on the subject. This is the 21st century. They have gotten my emails. They have responded within minutes to every previous email. I have very politely asked for a tracking number or an estimate as to when the battery will ship. It would only take a...

Ark Pak - Questions and Queries

Excerpt from an email I received from Battle Born before I purchased the battery: "This application is perfect for our battery. http://arkcorp.com.au//Content/manuals/ArkPak%20AP730%20manual%20120315.pdf On page 5 you can see there is a LiFePO4 setting for the charger and 14.6 volts is...

Ark Pak - Questions and Queries

After having the Battle Born 100 Ah LiFePO4 battery in the ArkPak for less than a year, I have to say that I would not recommend the battery. I've had problems with it and their tech support has been less than stellar. One afternoon last summer, the ArkPak indicated 68% battery capacity with...

Dodge short bed 3/4 ton for Kokopelli Trail?

It's not just buggies and sxs's tearing it up. Unskilled and impatient drivers in regular 4x4 rigs have caused far more damage. Long before the advent of rock crawlers and side-by-sides, I saw Moab's trails deteriorating. Many that used to be easy trails doable in stock vehicles now require...

    Shooting Platform

Before drones, I got high with Pole Photography. I stilll have a large, extendable fiberglass pole and a custom aluminum tripod I had built for it...but it hasn't been used in years. The camera was controlled wirelessly...still have all of that stuff too. Maybe I should put it on eBay.

    New JL???

The official unveiling will be at the LA Auto Show on Dec. 1...even though a lot of photos are out there already. The easier to fold windshield and flatter dash appear to be throwbacks to the CJ era. A step backwards is a step in the right direction. I only kept my JKUR for a couple of years...
