The mattress lays on the bunk when you close the lid, right? If you moved those 2 tubes lower, wouldn't that allow for a thicker mattress?

Well, 1st problem I see for you is structural integrity at the hinge. See, the Volvo has a seam between the cab and rear section. This will serve as a mounting point for my FlipPac hinge. You'll have to reinforce your roof above your sun visors. I think you'll have to let the FlipPac roof...

Old fashioned beds used a wire springboard just like that. So, if your wire mesh was about 6" too small all the way around, and attached to your frame with springs, you'd have about the same thing, right? Or, just attach your frame to your bed with big springs.

I wonder how a mattress from a fold-out sofa bed would do.
