Dual band HAM radio options, narrowing the choices

I have installed it on my PC but I think I need a mic or headset? Do you use it on your desktop, if so maybe you could explain how exactly? I'm just getting my radio wired up and online. I called the FCC Tuesday and learned that when you submit for a vanity call sign, it says allow 7-10...

Dual band HAM radio options, narrowing the choices

So I ended up getting the Kenwood TM-D710 with the GPS functionality, and plan to use an iPad for maps in the truck while mobile. I'm not sure if I need a cellular version or not to display aprs.fi and run GAIA, that's my game plan though. I still have to learn the radio which I know will take...

JK sPod mount and bracket $40 obo shipped for both

As shown, the metal threaded ball and the flat bracket that the sPod unit is mounted to, NOT the sPod itself. Came with my unit used, and it's going in a GX, RAM mount fits Jeep JK, the bracket as well I'll assume.

Can the iPad really be used as an out-of-signal range, off-road GPS device?

So you're using the cellular version correct? I debated tablet vs GPS unit but after reading the mess with Garmin stuff. I'm definitely NOT going that route. Too bad, they were an early pioneer in handheld GPS, just turned into a big co. with crappy service now it seems. As for tablets, iPads...

    T4R rear swingout on a GX460?

Best I learned is this; you can either buy what's already out there, or buy a 4R bumper and make it work, meaning if you can fab and weld and so on. I spoke to CBI, they just said oh yeah, we heard someone made it work. I talked to Mule Outfitters that did that work, and they said yeah it can...

    Bugeye's GX460 Build

Nice, be sure and trim the running boards and fit the sliders, otherwise it'll be a little naked. I wish I had, I just ripped mine off, trashed them, installed sliders, and wondered what the gap was all about till I figured it out, AFTER the trash part lol! Nice rig man

Help needed please with GX 460 slider options

I went with RSG, no complaints and they look nice after being rhino-lined; flat-bumpout versions

Dual band HAM radio options, narrowing the choices

Thanks, I'm in Loudoun as well and it's a bit overwhelming seeing everything available, then noticing what's 2m, 70cm, etc. So if I were to but the Kenwood, it's analog and not digital, so I get the APRS but can only use the EchoLink repeaters correct, or I can use any repeater, just in analog...

Dual band HAM radio options, narrowing the choices

Saw that you're local, in this area and other places I'd see myself going like CO & NM, or in the NorthEast US, doing a search on repeaterbook for either D-STAR or EchoLink repeaters on 2m or 70cm seem to have equal repeaters around for either, which seems the best route for here/NoVa...

    Mobile Ham Etiquette Questions.

Yeah good point, I'm still trying to decide on a radio myself, I like the TM-710GA but the ICOM 4100's look cool and have GPS too, 5100s have horrible screens, and I'm still trying to figure out if I want to go DSTAR or EchoLink, or down a level model wise. I like the GPS features. Not sure...

Dual band HAM radio options, narrowing the choices

Great info and resources, thanks to you both. I'm leaning towards the Kenwood but like the ICOM too, both the 4100 & 5100, cost is appealing but the TM-710GA is really feature rich, we'll see what I can find.

Dual band HAM radio options, narrowing the choices

I've narrowed it to Kenwood vs ICOM, 5100 screen sucks, and 4100 doesn't do what the more expensive TM-710GA would do, but D-STAR seems to be prevalent along the east coast a good bit, but the ease of use and ability to grow into and become more accustomed to features and use of the Kenwood...

Dual band HAM radio options, narrowing the choices

Great info thanks to you all. I'm not really looking to drop that much yet but we'll see what I can find used maybe, FTM-100DR doesn't look bad either. I was hoping to find some sales over this holiday weekend but wasn't anything out there really. Dual receive is definitely something I want.

    Mobile Ham Etiquette Questions.

Hey kidphc, I'm out in the NoVa area myself and about to test in a few weeks. Getting my equipment together as well and trying to decide on a good dual band 2m/70cm unit and antennae. It'd be great to get a local contact to practice out with and get more acquainted for sure. I try and hit...

Dual band HAM radio options, narrowing the choices

Planing to take my test in a few weeks and wanted to poll those more experienced here. The FAQ thread was extremely helpful and much appreciated! I'm shooting for around the $300 mark for the radio, and want as many useful features as I can get. I like the fact some offer built-in GPS, just...

    New GX460 Front Bumper Option

Do you know which wire was what, you're talking about the wire lead to the back of the headlight correct? I connected my fogs to the stock wires but cutoff the harness plug and added good bullet connectors to match the ones that came from the Ironman bumper foglights. I will post up some pics...

    Tex's 2019 LX 570

Gorgeous truck but not much can be done to mod the suspension lift wise from what I've read, great rig for hauling and towing, great interior, definitely more attractive than the LC inside, mod wise not so much.
