Mitsubishi really did drop the ball here in the states. I would say the montero is every bit as good as the equivalent year 4runner but the lack of aftermarket really does let it down. Cyi5 and I wheel together a lot and I'm jealous of all the options he has for parts.
The 4x4 system...
Be careful powder coating the wheels. I've heard that the heat process can weaken the wheels. Granted, that's Internet hearsay but no one wants broken wheels.
Ha, thanks for the shout-out. I was a little disappointed to see that Cherokee on that list and no Monty too. I did get a giggle when they said they don't need serious drive-line mods for bigger tires. I'm pretty sure 33s will snap those axles like twigs.
You may not be aware but the montero is the winningest model at the Dakar Rally. You don't win that kind of race 14 times (?) without being reliable. This was when the vehicles were much closer to stock than they are now too.
I hate to rain on the diesel love here but I'm 95% sure you aren't allowed to put any diesel engine in an originally gasoline powered vehicle in CA. Fingers crossed I'm wrong.
Any plans to increase the front travel? My only gripe with the Monteros is the lack of front travel. I'm jealous of the Toyota guys and the new a-arms they can get.
Small but important mod today:
Found some bolts to attach my new recovery point! I managed to increase my departure angle AND give myself to recover (or be recovered) from the rear. Thanks to scrubber3 for getting it to me.
