I use both 12V and 5V solar. Lighting is all on 5V (and phone charging) Fridge is on 12V. My 12V solar controller also has 5V USB port out that seams to run my lights and charge my phone just fine also. So basically if I don't bring the fridge I stick to 5V stuff.
Great lakes region? ah yea. I grew up in Fargo, moved to Minneapolis when I was 24, and then to Milwaukee since 1995. At least 6 months of crappy weather in all these locations. I'll keep a 4x4 in my driveway like I have since I was 18... 34 years ago.
I'll be taking a close look at...
Here is my basic setup. I built a Li-ion battery pack instead of NiCd.

Any idea if the stock harness adapts easily to the Metra connector (70-7003) set with this unit? My thoughts are this would be a fit.
What would be the main competitors to this vehicle in the USA market?
Xterra - assembled in USA (rough base price $30K)
4Runner - assembled in Japan (rough base price $38k)
you pretty much need 100 watts of solar to keep a "fridge" battery topped off and happy. You might get some cell phones, ipads and evening LEDs going too with this setup. Not too much else.
Looks like he is looking for a 3.5l SR as listed in the first post in this thread - so that would be a '95 or '96 with a DOHC or a '97 with a SOHC. 20 year old vehicles in good condition are hard to find. Keep your eyes open and be patient. And as J-n-M states I think there were even fewer...
EVO looks like a blend between Gen 2 and Gen 3 suspensions. Here is a look at a tear-down

I've got a 9500 (Warn) on my Montero SR 4 door (4175 curb weight from WiKi), its similar weight as your 4Runner (3930 curb weight from WiKi) No issues. I've also got a Smittybuilt 8000 on my older Raider (2 door) - lighter (3290 curb weight from WiKi) than your 4Runner - Also never an issue.
That is crazy. We bought our '05 nearly 4.5 years ago with ~78K on it. Now has 138K on it. Only PMs - timing belt, fluid changes and normal wear items like brakes / tires.

03+ limited. Newer, more powerful, and nearly the same cost.
'01 also seams plagued by the ABS unit going out and its about a $2k fix at a dealer
You should put a Kill-A-Watt on that 'fridge because I doubt it would be pulling 722 watts continuous. Its probably 3 to 5 amps while the compressor is running, and maybe the start-up surge is 6 (722). Plus, the compressor is OFF for a lot of the time so during the OFF time maybe 1 or less...
