Dual Rear Wheels and Mild Off-roading - Is it Really That Bad?

Yah, some of us weirdos go everywhere, near regardless of season or weather. That's why you go with a 4-season setup, right?

Superduty lifts, alignments, and caster/camber bushings

A heads up for those looking to align their lifted or leveled Superduties. If you are chasing your butt trying to get thing aligned, read on.... I've been struggling to get our 2011 F250 properly aligned since swapping to a set of heavy duty front coils that resulted in about 2-1/2" of lift...

Dual Rear Wheels and Mild Off-roading - Is it Really That Bad?

The reason is simple. You literally have twice the tire contact patch, so applied PSI from tire to surface is reduced by 50%. Running loaded all the time will help. As will tire selection. If you intend to run on slick surfaces, the last thing you want is a tire with large tread blocks...

Dual Rear Wheels and Mild Off-roading - Is it Really That Bad?

The single reason why we kept to a SRW setup is how utterly useless (and dangerous) a dually can be in slick winter/snow/ice travel.

Tire to bed clearance - super single

No one size fits all. Flex it out and see. I like to keep at least 1-1/2" of clearance from everything once flexed to allow for safely running snow chains

    Refillable 1 Lb Propane Bottles

I've been refilling the small tanks for decades  All that's needed is bigger tank, an adaptor and a custom tool to operate the bleed valve. Only in the past 4-5 years have we converted over to Isobutane for backpacking, simply due to weight.

    Idacamper (Superduty) updates 2023

Another trip in the books, with another 400 miles or so on it. Doing fantastic, though I still havnt had a chance to get it aligned. It drives great, but has a bit of wondering. Dropped it off at the local shop and looks like we need caster bushings to add more caster, as well as a pitman arm...

    Idacamper (Superduty) updates 2023

It is a silly design. But so far no problems. We have near 30k miles on the setup, typically at 60-80PSI before the leaf swap. With the higher load rated leafs they will seldom be used, so I don't foresee a problem ever.

    Idacamper (Superduty) updates 2023

Yeah, I noticed the rear didnt change much, but the front raised it quite a bit. But we are in business. Just finished a near 800 mile trip with the new suspension and it is fantastic. Just incredible how well it handles highway travel, and no more bottoming out the front off the pavement. Its...

They are a dual pane insulated glass with aluminum frames. Made by Hehr. Absolutely love them. This camper has been on the road since 2012, and zero problems. Regardless of temp, from -20 to 140(F) and regardless of wind/rain/snow, they do awesome. And nearly regardless of weather, they can...

Just another day amongst the trees. This pull-out with an old fire-ring on a forest road happened to be a small cow pasture. :D

    Maxing out your truck’s payload

If you are inclined to stick to Ford… Any 2005+ F250/350 would be a great fit. If you are looking to stick to Ford, any 2005+ 3/4 or 1-ton would do great. Beefy running gear, great powertrains, and proper chassis. I stick to 4wd for a multitude of reasons, but one many forget about when...

    Maxing out your truck’s payload

At 8443lbs you are likely near or over 5000lbs on the rear axle. At the very minimum, from a raw safety perspective, you must upgrade tires and possibly wheels. A proper load-E tire with a max load rating of 3200lbs or so (pretty standard) and wheels with a similar load rating (If existing are...

    Maxing out your truck’s payload

Sorry, but Id never consider a 8.8 as a legit axle to haul serious weight, even with its oil bath “bearings” The bearings that use the axle shaft as the inner race, so when they go they destroy the axles as well? Yeah, no thanks. ;)

    Maxing out your truck’s payload

That's nice My concern is about bearings. Full floaters are oil bath, and designed to haul. And by design also have a considerably higher safety factor.
