Converting to manual locking front hubs

Well thats just it. Unit bearings can fail quick and to the point of undriveable. Not so for traditional bearings. Even if they are making noise they wont leave you stranded. And back to my point (perhaps in the other thread) rarely do traditional bearings were to the point of...

Converting to manual locking front hubs

For most, this isnt a big deal. But most people change cars/trucks like they change their underwear. Considering your signature, Id bet you are one of them. And Ive got a friend that "loves" his Rams, but cannot seem to keep them longer than 80k Guess what, he hasnt seen a wheel bearing failure...

Converting to manual locking front hubs

I've already spoken of the danger. It has everything to do with the plastic bearing cages on OEM unit bearings. When they go bad, they can go real bad real quick. So... from stranded in the back country or on the side of the road to put you in the ditch, on your lid, or worse... I havnt even...

    Idacamper Custom Flatbed

Happy thanksgiving. Spent much of the morning cutting and loading some easy access dead-fall tamaracs on the family property I like to haul log-loads, using crane as much as possible to make it quick. Its a crane I built years ago, that folds up and stows on the front of the trailer. This is...

Compressor plus tank or just the pump, man!?!

Only reasons you would want a tank would be for an air nozzle to blow things off and/or to run efficient/low CFM air tools in bursts. I have a tank for blowing things off. Air filter, boots, the dogs, interior rugs, etc... the list is nearly endless.

    Question about building wood cabinets

10+ years and 75k+ miles later, our very simple and very lightweight VG fir and 1/8" birch panel skinned cabinets are just as sturdy as when they were built Skeletons were pocket screwed and PL premium glued together, skins were applied with PL and stainless 18GA brads Doors are just 6mm Baltic...

    Snow chains for offroad use.

In our snowy travels here in North Idaho include pushing into unplowed but not gated public lands and campgrounds, 4wd gets us in, and chains occasionally go on to get us back out. Rarely do they go on on our way in. The are in effect a safety. We run a big truck camper, and dont do any...

    F350 SuperCab 4x4 Lariat 6.2 V8 Build Story - Completed

Looks like you are off to a great start? A suggestion if I may, if you are going full flatbed you really should go side entrance. It makes a world of a difference in useable interior space as well as stays much cleaner than rear.

An update, and a seriously overdue project for this bed. Especially since we are due for a firewood run from the property. Side racks. Tool less, locates and locks in with pins on the front, straddles rear rack and secures with snap pins. Thin-wall steel tubing and .090 aliminum...

ldea's for keeping one's water system from freezing ?

Not sure if its been mentioned, but mass helps too. As in, the more water you have in the tank the better. We use our truck camper a lot during the winter, so keeping the tanks and lines from freezing is a must. The entire system is within the heated cabin, complete with vents thru cabinetry to...

    Snow chains for offroad use.

We carry two chains at all times. Winter season we carry a full set. Both sets cam style, wouldn't bother with anything else on a full-size. Just learn how to install them tight, and you dont even need bungies. **pro tip** air your tires down a but to install, install tight, then air back up...

Question on Logic of Swapping 20” OEM Rims on Superduty for 17” Rims

18's will likely offer a better selection of tires. I went from 17's to 18's for my truck to get the 4080lb rated 35" Toyos We roll at 11,500 to 12k loaded with zero worries.

The off throttle upshift is a common complaint. I typically just lock it out of upper gears to avoid it. It never does struggle, but you certainly have to wring its neck on large grades. 2nd gear at 5000rpm+ doing 60mph+ up a grade is a new thing for us, coming from an old 7.3 Powerstroke...

Converting to manual locking front hubs

There is a whole lot more to it than serviceability. A unit bearing on a superduty that rarely seem to last more than 75k, when it goes bad, is downright dangerous. The bearing retainers used are plastic. So once things wear to the point of creating heat that exceeds the plastics ability to...

And a small update I did prior to our last trip... The front over-cab rack had some wobble as well. So a simple X-brace using cable and turnbuckles were used to quiet it down. The front eyes are also used to attack the camper to the bed for additional strength.

Here you go, photos of the rear dampers. These are nothing more than front shocks for this truck. The used car dealer that we purchased it from had tossed these inexpensive shocks on it. I swapped them out to KYB Monomax shocks, so these were free to use... The lower mount is a tab thats...

thanks tires are 285/75r18 Toyo AT2’s. Stock 3.73 gearing. While deeper gears would be nice, it does great as is. You just dont use 6th gear as often ?

This photo I posted previously shows the amount of available pivot. Ive never bothered to measure it but it is a lot. Not shown is the shock assembly that I also incorporated to dampen movement when unloaded. I have the truck in the shop this weekend, Ill snap some photos of that as well.

There is a bit of wizardry for sure. But unlike a spring mount, a properly built pivoting mount like mine goes a long way in isolating the camper from stresses, with considerably less substructure (and weight) The entire bed, including crossbody box and over-cab rack, weighs just 400#...

Thanks guys. I appreciate the comments. The factory bed did flex plenty. The chassis on these trucks is still pretty flexy. Here is a shot of the chassis flex. Both drivers front and passenger rear tires are hanging in this shot. Its a good 6-8 inches from rear of cab to bumper of twist in...
