I know, right??
I'm just kicking myself that I didn't find the source of the problem earlier. I had assumed that it couldn't be the lower shock bolts because they "must be OEM". Proper testing and diagnosis makes all the difference, and I failed for a long time on this problem until just a...
I picked up two 1/2" x 3" grade 8 bolts from a local hardware store, along with two washers for each, and Nylock nuts for each. Total was around $10. I jacked up the rear of the truck so the rear suspension could hang close to full droop. Removed the old lower mounting bolts, cleaned up the...
Thanks! I'm a rookie at this.
Just got off the phone with Icon....have some information that may be helpful to others.
-Lower spherical bearing rides on spacers
-Interior diameter of the spacers is 1/2"
-OEM bolts are usually around 12mm
-1.25" between mounting tabs
-The guy I talked to said...
The one I pulled did have an enlarged hole, but only on the top. The bolt itself wasn't moving when I tested by bouncing, but they were obviously overtorqued. I think that is what was keeping them in place for the most part. If I get the right size bolt for the spherical bearing it should...
You're right, it is the bolt diameter. I pulled one of them last night to see and it's obvious that the bolt is too small. It looks like someone in the past changed the rear shocks and used non-OEM bolts.
Definitely some damage to the bolt. This thing was a bear to get out....I didn't use...
I did a little more digging on my rear-end clunk and I found the culprit.
I checked the lower shock bolts on the rear and both were torqued down. The upper bolts may be too tight though....the shocks had no instructions with them, and there are none on Icon's website for this product. When I...
I need some recommendations on what torque wrench I should get.
During the leaf spring adventure I realized that my Harbor Freight wrench is just not up to the task. I don't trust that the torque values are consistent or accurate. I ended up using my neighbor's Snap-On digital torque wrench...
Project: Rear leaf spring replacement
Purpose: The leaf springs that were on the truck when I bought it were the original stock ones with 1" blocks. There has been a worsening popping and clunking from the rear end when going over any bumps. I had a set of used leaf springs with Wheeler's AAL...
Pull your gauge cluster, take off the panel, and then use wet sanding paper on the back of it to remove the green film over the parts you want white. I used black spray paint to paint out a couple things I didn't want showing through at night (I don't need to see KPH). While you are in there...
Not totally sure on the newer generations of Tundra, but on the 1st gen you will need new upper control arms if you put any sort of coilovers in that allow more droop. Otherwise the UCA will likely sustain damage and/or the upper ball joint will fail. I don't think it necessarily has to do...
Front Suspension Rebuild Part 2
After a series of delays due to the holidays and shipping company issues, the rebuilt shocks finally arrived after 2.5 weeks. While the truck was stuck on jack stands I took the opportunity to spray the frame with Fluid Film. It makes quite the mess and reeks...
I believe that some of their mounts attach directly to existing bolts in some vehicles. The Tundra doesn't have any existing bolts to access that are useful, so they had to drill directly to the plastic. I'm honestly surprised at how solid it is though. It feels like it was bolted down to...
Ham Radio Install part 3
I met with our local ham club yesterday and met a lot of really nice people. I'm brand new into ham and they kindly accepted me into their group and took me under their wing. A few of them evaluated my mobile install and were very pleased....that was a relief to know...
Ham Radio Install Part 2
Wrapping up the install for my Alinco DR-735t. I ran the remote head wire under the edge of the center console (next to the driver's seat) and from there up to the front of the console right underneath the pull-out ashtray and cup holders.
The mount I'm using for...
Ham Radio Install Part 1
Purpose - I decided to get serious about my ham radio involvement. Hooking up a cheap Baofeng handheld to the external antenna was marginal at best. Reception was spotty and transmission was no better. Battery life wasn't that great either. A dedicated mobile rig...
Front Suspension Refresh Part 1
Purpose: I've known that I had to have my front coilovers rebuilt for some time. I bought them used from a friend and they were probably due for rebuild when I got them. Over the past year they have become extremely harsh and uncomfortable, though no oil is...
Yep, all done on all counts. They put weights on several different depths of the wheels and clocked the tires. Overall much smoother, especially at speed. Still a little something there but it's definitely not tire or wheel related now.
I'd forgotten about that, thanks for the reminder. Aerosol or paint sprayer Fluid Film? And if I use Aerosol, how many cans do you think to coat our trucks?
