New kid on the block. :)

He means yours is always locked in 4hi and 4low, there is no AWD or viscous coupler like the Super Select has. Yours is regular ol' 4WD, it's actually a really good T-Case and the Strongest most reliable of the Montero T-cases.

    Toasty's '98 Montero Build

Aftermarket ECUs and wiring exist for these engines so it's probably not terrible. Won't be the first time someone mixed and matched transmissions to a 1UZ. I'm making mine act and function stock because i want ultimate reliability/legality more than extra power or aftermarket support, the 300hp...

So VVT-i and AW3 is going to require some ECU trickery or custom management. The 1UZ ECU has integrated TCU so if it doesn't see it's transmission it goes into limp mode, so some guys run a trans simulator to run a manual or 4 speed. The non VVT-i ECU expects to see the A340/AW3 so that's why...

Having been a Montero guy for almost 20 years It's a new feeling getting so much respect from 4wd shop owners and other wheelers i bump into.

Mid term report, it's AWESOME! Drives better on road and off, balance is still there and its very predictable. DO NOT GET A REMAN STEERIN GEAR! I had been fighting a steering dead spot on both trucks caused by worn sector shafts/bores, i bought them from a reputable Bronco restoration company...

So you want to put King shocks on a Third Gen Montero...

The cool thing Jamie and i discussed while he was here was the potential to do a subframe lift then essentially lower the suspension AND run a slightly longer shock. This would gain the a small amount of travel but more importantly allow you to utilize the full suspension arc vs a suspension...

So you want to put King shocks on a Third Gen Montero...

So, I'm not against the subframe lift. I think it's an awesome way to run bigger tires without increased CV angle. These trucks are super underrated, you can do almost ANY trail with just gearing, locker(s) and appropriate armor. It's actually sort of mind blowing how good they are offroad even...

School Me on Rear Differentials - Gen 3 Montero

You can swap the 9.5" 4.90 R&P into a Gen 3 from a Sport but not the differential because the spline count is different. Also I'd like to point out that the hybrid LSD might not be worth the trouble if you're doing it for off-road traction. They work really well until a tire is lifted and after...

    1997 montero swap options?

Talk to Kaliracer, he's got some info on 3.8 MIVEC if you want to up your power. Otherwise look for a low milage 3.5 SOHC from a Montero or a Sport or if you're a little adventurous but don't quite have the budget for the MIVEC you can score a regular 3.8 SOHC from an Endeavor wich are still...

One thing i learned is it's a tight fit, getting the steering and panhard rod all the way i wanted took a lot of work and it's still not exactly how i wanted. I'll probably draw up a new panhard mount for the axle side to make it easier on me if i ever do another one or someone else does.

Weighed the truck at all 4 corners; front left was 1300lbs and the rest were 1200lbs. Ordered a pair of Kings from Accutune, the first set got straight fittings and i ordered the second with 90's. I'll get 90's for this set later. Painted all the bare steel and installed the shocks to finally...

Fitting the plates, steering adapter and towers. The driver tower needed extra work to clear the steering shaft, you can see now how the tabs on the frame plates work to put the towers in the correct location. Oh yeah, installed some Wilwoods...
