    Toasty's '98 Montero Build

When i catch the 'Rona and they send me home for a quarantine i'll power through and get some real progress on the v8 swap or die trying.

    Toasty's '98 Montero Build

So far i haven't done anything exciting, i pulled the Montero transmission, removed the center console and trans wiring. Then i cleaned up the trans tunnel and stuck on some Noico. The SAS'd Monty broke another axle shaft so i've been working on that getting it stripped down for RCVs and i...

    Auto Trans ID

There are 3.5 powered LS models, starting in '97 and maybe late '96 for the '97 year model. The trans will handle the power, this same transmission was used behind the V8 as well. You'll be fine.

    SAS info and parts thread

So, PA_JERO and I installed the RCV's in his truck (i inherited his old axles). So now his front end is fully upgraded and mine is fixed for now. I had a couple big purchases for the V8 swap keeping me from RCV's but I'll be upgrading before the Sierra Challenge in September. At least we can now...

Dang, nice build. You've been at that a while, lots of detail. Is it completed? The thread seems to leave us in suspense, I'm swapping a V8 next as well.

Thanks! Just takes practice. I'm just an okay driver, guys like PA_JERO and Montypower have talent behind the wheel. Maybe I'll get there some day.

    SAS info and parts thread

*Updated this thread with supporting words for the photos, go ahead and check it out above. Went wheeling for realz this time to see how they held up to more serious stuff, PA_JERO dented his roof and i broke the passenger front U-Joint. I kinda thought Spicer joints were going to be short...

    Paj Evo Engine Swap

I love the idea of a 6G74 DOHC bored out BTW. Without specific knowledge of how to swap an engine yourself i think it's your best bet to just follow the footsteps of those who have already done it and do the 3.8 swap. Use a shop that has the experience and just buy all the things needed for...

    Paj Evo Engine Swap

Be cool if Leo posts up his 3.8 swap with info, maybe we can figure the dollar to horspower ratio.

    Paj Evo Engine Swap

Another HUGE detail i forgot, IF the donor Evo was an automatic it can be paired up with the V5A51 from the Gen 3 which will make a huge difference in efficiency and putting the power to the ground. Those ECU's have integrated transmission controllers, unfortunately this also very likely means...

    Paj Evo Engine Swap

Actually the 3.5 MIVEC makes more power, not just the advertised 10-15 extra horsepower either. That 3.5 is an all aluminum race engine and it probably makes 300+ horsepower and the hint at this is the "276" horsepower. That's the magic number in 90's Japanese race cars which means it's far...

    Monteros on craigslist

Probably $2500ish assuming no rust. I'd actually pay a bit more as an enthusiast just for the low milage, I'd still disassemble it and refresh it.

    Prepping for Rubicon Trail

The Rubicon is really fun, with stock T-case gears you may find yourself winching up Cadillac Hill but that's not uncommon. Pack a couple spare CV's and tie rod ends, probably won't break any but just in case. I'm running the Rubicon this year as well as some other Sierra Nevada trails. It's...

    Logan's gen 2 V8 desert runner build

If I get wiring done before you I'll post a diagram and notes, won't be the same as yours but some things will carry over. You should be able to down convert my harness from my diagrams assuming you have the electrical manual for your SR. The stuff you're on your own with is getting the ECU to...

    Logan's gen 2 V8 desert runner build

It's possible, hopefully someone has done it before. Otherwise your ECU is going to be looking for an A650 and throwing a fit about it. ***ALSO i just noticed your original engine is a DOHC which means you only have 1 speed sensor on the transmission, even the 4 speed 1UZ cars have 2 speed...
