Wow! Nicest X I've seen to date!:Wow1:
I'm returning to steel wheels after tearing up two sets (10) of alloy wheels. Found a set of stock XJ steel wheels for $10 each on Craigslist. They are 15 x 7, 5 on 4 1/2. A little prep and paint and I think they look pretty decent.
I hit a lot of brush, heavy brush at times, so I kept it as close to the body as possible. It's also very secure where it exits the engine compartment and on the windshield pillar. I wanted cooler and cleaner air for running around the hot dry deserts here, as well as engine protection from...
I wanted a RTT but now, you all have me thinking I'm better off staying with my ground tents. The price tag of RTT's have kept me grounded! I'm also not a fan of raising my center of gravity more and more by adding weight to the roof. Interesting seeing all the tent options others use on the trail.
I hear ya! The FIPK kit is great in a dry desert. My TJ still has one, but not for long. Always need to be careful about taking it into mud holes puddles and crossings. I know the one time I'm not it may be costly. Hope to get the TJ snorkel done before winter. So many up grades, so little time! LOL
I gave it some thought during my planning. It would require some form of self actuating valve that would allow water out but not in. I think even the Montero design would allow water in once the air box itself is submerged even partially. The Montero and XJ trap method allows water from the...
Also made a mini trunk in the rear of the TJ and made a locking Hi Lift mount on top of it. Around town topless or wheeling, things are locked up and secure. Unlock and swing out tire carrier, unlock tail gate. No other way to access what is in the trunk.
Built a shelf/storage compartment in the back of my XJ. It's bolted in tight so items won't be flying around while wheeling. Also has tie down points on top for additional items. No more strapping down a dozen different containers and bags. Just put them in the back and close the hatch. Also...
Thank you! I spent a lot of time sanding off all the casting marks labeling and defects in the PVC parts. Wanted it to look as clean as possible. I think the spray on bed liner helps a lot in getting rid of the PVC look too.
Another plus that was unplanned, the positioning on the windshield...
Wow! You have been through an ordeal that has always concerned me. Luckily I have avoided it so far. So I recently went the home made snorkel route on my XJ. The TJ is next! Here's a link to my snorkel build. If you need more info message me. Glad you're rollin again...
Spare fluids and chemicals in one and small spare parts and tools in the other. I use the Action Packers myself. The size is ideal but that's about it. I can get 4 in my rear storage area on the XJ.
The air box does have two low chambers with a quarter inch hole in each one. They have both been sealed tight to stop water from entering when the jeep goes into a wet hole as the air box is directly behind the driver headlight. One of the lowest points on the XJ when entering water or mud.
I recently added a snorkel to my XJ. The ARB was nearly $400 for my 1997 Jeep so I opted to build my own. Yes another poop pipe snorkel, but I think it came out pretty clean. It's finished with spray on truck bed liner rather than paint. Total cost was $74.00
Something I have not seen any...
