steel mesh for mobile 2/70 antenna?

You going to have it set up for next month when we camp? I had a qso with N4AOW from Jay's property in November ---- 50 miles as the crow flies. That's with my 18" ducky on my horrible groundplane Jeep, hilltop to fire tower, my 65 watts to whatever John was pushing through the air at the...

    official Huevo Ranchero recipe thread

I was literally a poster-boy for a vitamin/supplement company, ate low-fat meats, lots of veggies, got PLENTY of exercise. No refined sugars at all. Lots of non-fat milk & yogurt though. Had my string of heart attacks at age 44 with a total cholesterol of 127, good blood pressure, no belly...

steel mesh for mobile 2/70 antenna?

A small mount with radii like Dave is displaying will work for you, Mike. I did it on one of my motorcycles years ago for the CB and it worked very very well. Or just buy a mount for the hood and use a ducky like I have on the Jeep. Sometimes we, as overlanders, overthink things...

Cholesterol is in animals, period. I'm part of an ongoing study my doctor is running through Emory. Check out Dean Ornish's decades of research on the topic. Or all the research through Cornell.

    Vehicle Portable 2m/70cm setup

X2, Max Magmounts are better than in the cab but hard mount kills it. There's no way that a 50w radio should run off cig lighter. Too many amps. Too dirty. Get on the HRO mailing list, wait for a sale, drive out to Norcross and buy a good hardmount radio and antenna. Buy once, cry once...

    BEWARE OF RTIC COOLERS

One of my colleagues came in today with an Rtic tumbler swag-branded by the local TV station where his wife works. Found it interesting that they were giving away an Rtic rather than the extreme no-name "travel mugs" that usually become swag.

    Haming it up finally

Max --- I just hit the Bank of America and Buckhead repeaters with no problem from Old Milton in Alpharetta. Had a good qso with a Kennesaw sation on the Buckhead and Avondale Estates station on the BOA Tower. I think your radio is wonky... Good wheeling around and playing radios with you the...

I used to eat like that but stopped after all of the heart attacks. Now it's just potatoes, onions, peppers, ketchup, and coffee.

OR heated Mitts vs OR heated gloves.

Keeping your core warm helps your body pump blood to your extremities too. When it's really cold and we're not active I put a pair of handwarmers in my shirt pockets (second layer after the thermals) and that keeps my blood pumping. If your core is cool, your body slows down to preserve your...

OR heated Mitts vs OR heated gloves.

I used heated grips and Held gloves for years. My wife liked the gloves but I found heated gloves too bulky. You're talking about motorcycle use, right?

    Light bar switch gets hot!

I agree. It's a $.35 switch that's probably only rated for .35 amps. If the relay is bad or miswired and more amps are running through it, it will melt eventually.

    Light bar switch gets hot!

Measure the amperage at the switch with a multimeter. It should be quite low. http://www.wikihow.com/Measure-Amperage If you read high amps, you've either wired it wrong or have a crappy relay.

    Cold weather Overlanding tips

More layers, spares of the more layers, several pairs of gloves, spare boots, buddy heater, extra cooler to keep things from freezing, 12v blanket. I like winter camping the best. Makes you appreciate the fire more.

    "armor"

The black run of steel below my doors running from fender to fender. Comes in super handy when you're bouncing off things. I buggered the rocker on my Power Wagon something awful at the Flats...

Off road lights: A confession and a couple of questions...

I have two HID lights pointed forward and two LED floods angled to the side of the road. Along with top-tier JW Speaker headlights and foglights, I don't miss much. This is for offroad only, mind you. Not remotely legal or safe for the street.

    "armor"

It also depends on what vehicle you're wheeling and where you're wheeling it. There's overlanding and there's rock crawling. People will armor-up their Jeeps with body wrap steel at the corners, above the rockers, etc. There are even laser-cut magnetic panels available to slap over the doors...

aftermarket lighting in place of factory fog lights.

Good choices. Stay away from off-brand H9s and HIRs. Many dubious products out there.

aftermarket lighting in place of factory fog lights.

Not all headlight systems would do that though. Foglights, otoh, would. But, for our demographic, foglights plus highbeams work really well offroad ---- but horrible on the road. Gets to be a puzzle... Good advice.
