I get ya.
If you want to make them god-lights and use them offroad, HIDs are practical. But I'd upgrade the wiring. The amperage jolt from the ignighter is often significant. I've measured as much as 13 amps with some.
But, otoh, if you're just looking for lots of light and not a real...
HIDs draw fewer amps than many foglights while the arc is burning but draw much more when the ignighter starts them. They're not for foglight use at all.
There are a few decent LED foglights but those are pricey.
Hella has a couple of good foglights that might fit in fairly easily. I like their 90mm H7 --- http://www.rallylights.com/hella-90mm-fog-lamp-h7-with-rubber-boot.html
There are others, of course. First step is to measure...
Which one are you trying to hit? I can hit Jasper from my house in Canton with 5 watts on my HT.
You might be trying to hit a repeater that's down or you might have your offset in the wrong direction, wrong pl, etc.
I did a Dutch batch of biscuits over the weekend in a burn-ban area.
Took my spare propane stove and started heating the lid to about 400 degrees.
Heated up the pot on the stove to 350 and turned down the flame.
Put in the biscuits (Annie's) and put the lid on top fast.
Used a propane torch to...
That repeater is great for camping/wheeling all over north Georgia. I'm able to talk to Tenmogger from my office in Alpharetta up to his farm in Greenback TN on it.
I did a little mountain-topping from Jay Bird's hills over the weekend. Talked to N4AOW up in TN on 52. Not a huge distance but...
I've been using them for years now. Started with them on my motorcycle ----- things would freeze very easily in the trunk or panniers. I had electric grips, electric vest, and even electric socks. We'd ride all year long, snow, whatever. But nothing's worse than a frozen sandwich or water on...
Great point.
...but PIAAs are known more for hype than light.
Better bulbs and better wires will certainly make a difference. But they'll still draw more amperage than a set of LED cubes.
I used to tow my teardrop with the Power Wagon, Jim. You'll forget that it's back there...
So what's the new camper going to be? Dendy ditched his Conqueror trailers and got an Airstream. You looking to go big?
I've been happy with the pair that I have. No condensation, always fire right up. Got one for free actually with a door-prize coupon and bought the other one for $40. Can't complain about the price.
I have them up front pointed to the sides to illuminate the ditches when I wheel. I have a...
Congrats, Jimbo. Hope you enjoy it.
You've been a fun JK owner/contributor for so long...
Maybe you'll pick up a diesel JL in a few years and come back to the fold.
Costco and Sams have good base layers at bargain prices at this time of year.
I have some Cabela's worsterlon shirts to go over that (synthetic wool). They were half price at the end of the season years ago, never show any wear at all.
If necessary, a wooly-pully over that.
Top layer is a...
Most LED cubes have very misleading lumen ratings.
You can go two routes ---- a pair of quality lights like Rigid Dually D2 that are quite bright (but spendy) or get some cheap&stinky cubes from Amazon and add more as needed.
I have a pair from http://extremeledlightbars.com/led-light-pods that...
I've had the STT-Pro and S/T on sand ----- the Pro ran circles around the old S/T. Never had Maxx on any real beach but it has the same rubber compound as the Pro and should air-down better than the S/T like Scott was saying.
