Here is another good thread on this topic. Rob goes into great detail and has an excellent example of how Puekert's law effects the AH rating of the battery.
Dave, this has been a fun discussion with you :) It's great that you've taken the time to tinker with your fridge and battery to figure out what's going on so you have a good idea of where you stand with regards to running your fridge on a single battery. I recommend that anyone considering this...
11.5V is less than 20% state of charge, so you're severely shortening the life of the battery, even more so because it's not a deep-cycle model. You and I both need to get some solar panels.
:suning:
I used a testing device made specifically for capturing the data for the fridge article. I thought about using a stepped-down AC bench power supply, but instead decided on 12V deep-cycle batteries to better simulate the real thing. There were two test circuits, side-by-side, hooked up to two...
I should also mention that idling the engine with the RPMs raised in an effort to recharge a battery that is substantially discharged is poor practice. (And yes, I've been guilty of doing it myself.) It's a huge waste of fuel and a cause for unnecessary pollution, as it simply takes too long to...
Interesting topic. I wrote an article on this very subject for the next issue of Overland Journal. The prospect of using a fridge with only a single battery is highly subjective, so in order to help define your own decision you should examine as much hard data as you can. Start with the fridge...
Quiet for a Tuesday, Solo in the Algerian Sahara
This is super cool. As opposed to the highly technical books we've been enjoying from Tom Sheppard, here is a chance to go along with him on expedition, and just be along for the ride. He's an exceptional author and has a great sense of...
Thanks guys., wish you were here. Greg, it was great to have you out with us today. Great trail!
Another shot from just before we got to camp. . .
Mmmm. . . have you tried the "giddy up"from NB yet?
BTW, Al is doing his Africa slideshow right now. :lurk:
Hello from the "southern" overland route! We had the awards dinner last night at the main event camp, and today we worked our way across one of the two overland routes. Al Walter and I led the group and it's a new route for us, traveling roughly from Wickenburg, AZ to the KOFA range. We met some...
