    Starting Over... Taco Style!

Cool! I am in Prescott so hopefully we'll get to meet up sometime. Yea, Greg is good at that witty humor stuff. It must run in the family (wait util you meet his brother Mark...)

    Garmin 378 or Lowrance baja

Here are some screen captures from MapCreate. Manaus, Brazil area Manaus - zoomed in (no more detail at closer zooms). Lima, PeruAs you can see, major roads and water are shown, but not named. There is a pretty good amount of towns/cities with names shown. For more comprehensive maps...

Does Tread Lightly stop at the border?

Chuck, these are definitely good (and tough) points to discuss. Personally, I do not differentiate my respect for the environment on one side of the border or the other. "Tread Lightly" ethics can (and should) easily be practiced in Mexico (or any other country) as well as the U.S. And I...

    Garmin 378 or Lowrance baja

For a trip to South America, you are likely to find better maps for the Garmin. You will not be able to load maps made for Garmin on to the Lowrace (tracks, waypoints and routes, yes. But maps, no). Do I understand correctly that you do not want to use the laptop for full-time navigation? If you...

Coilovers: are they worth the cost?

A little update to this: Sway-A-Way no longer offers the 675lb coil for the 2.0" units, so I think these days the 2.5" units are the way to go if there will be any amount of additional weight on the front end. The standard 650lb. coils that come with 2.5" coilovers will work well with most...

    The New 2008 Defender SVX...

I like it just fine. It's easy for me to imagine some alterations to the look in pursuit of improved function. What new-model vehicle isn't "blingy" in showroom trim? The new Toyotas, Nissans, G-wagens, and U.S. domestics certainly are. (Except perhaps the Jeep JK, which is probably the least...

    Arrgh! Axle seals AGAIN!

23,301 miles - replace left rear seal, replace oil soaked shoes 89,000 miles - replace right rear axle seal and bearing 112,000+ miles - replace right rear axle seal This is not uncommon on the Tacomas. Did you get the rear brake shoes replaced and the drums resurfaced? If not, it might...

    Fiberglass, round point, short shovel

Another option is to buy a longer one, drill out the rivet for the grip handle and remove it, cut the fiberglass to the desired length, and replace the grip handle.
