We have air bags in the rear of our 917 beside the parabolics. there is not enough room in the front for airbags. Our front is a conventional spring pack, 13 leaves! Any heavy truck spring shop should be able to replace your broken springs. The issue with our trucks is not that the can't do it...
It is a 9 tonne truck, It is hard to tell if it is full or empty by "feel", fuel consumption full or empty does not change much.. When you put in 100 gallons every cent in price is a dollar saved.

We carry a 5 gallon paint pail. The air hose lives in it when we travel. In sub zero temps we leave the gray water valve open and drain into it, then carry to dump.
What unit are you running Neil? Our Webasto ran trouble free and put out great heat up to 4500m above 5000m sometimes it would not fire up and I had to reset it. Once it fired it put out heat, smoke on start up only.
I don't understand using a timer with a camper. A thermostat is the only way to guarantee the camper will be kept from freezing. Our T-stat has a "frost" setting that will maintain 5C. Simple,- dependable.
No problems with borders, Costa Rica does not allow RHD vehicles. You cannot drive from Panama to Columbia you have to ship by RORO and it is not simple or cheap.
If you are losing liters of coolant into the oil you have to stop running the engine. Bearing failures will be next. You may have to float the truck to a location to deal with it.
