Any suggestions for a single solar panel, 12v system, 100+ watts

I'm putting two Renogy 100W "lightweight" panels on my Jeep Wrangler. These used to be called their "flexible panels" but from what I'm told they now bond them to a very thin sheet of aluminum to make them a little stronger, while still being crazy-light. -Dan

Poll- Do you actually sleep inside?

I drove Alaska->Argentina with a ground tent, my 2 door Jeep was way to short for me to sleep in (I'm 6'2") and I never did try to sleep in it. After getting lots of inspiration from people driving around the world, I'm now building my 4 door Jeep so I can choose to sleep in it, or on top...

Two year circumnaviagtion of Africa in my 2007 JKUR - The Road Chose Me

Sorry to hear that Frank, thanks for the well wishes. The diesel swap is about 10 times more work than I anticipated, and we're coming right down to the wire. I expect to pull a few 20 hour days this week on it :) -Dan

Block heaters? Battery warmers? Oil pan heaters?

Past about -35C even synthetic motor oil looks and spreads like butter. It's fun to play with actually. Regular dinosaur oil does that somewhere around -25C. Like I said above, keep in mind you have absolutely no heating on your transmission, diffs and transfer case, so those are all using oil...

Block heaters? Battery warmers? Oil pan heaters?

I live in the Yukon, regularly see temps past -40 C/F. You need, at a minimum, all three heaters. Get a block heater, a battery blanket and an oil pan heater. If you have a big vehicle with a large oil pan, get two oil pan heaters. The standard rule of thumb up here is to leave it plugged in...

HOW-TO: DIY JK Wrangler Breather Hose Extensions for $30

Extending the breather hoses on the JK Wrangler is great insurance – I want my Jeep to be capable of deep water crossings without worrying about replacing all my fluids soon after. In remote Africa, that likely won't be an option. I'd much rather DIY it than buy an expensive kit, the...

Two year circumnaviagtion of Africa in my 2007 JKUR - The Road Chose Me

The diesel conversion on my Jeep is extremely close to finished. I put an insulated cover on my Dometic CFX-35 fridge to combat the extremely hot temperatures I expect in Africa I made it official: I've built a drinking water tank/pump/filtration setup using a Shurflow 12v pump and a PURA...

HOW-TO: DIY Kill Switch for JK Wrangler

The factory JK service manual is very vague about the differences between an auto and a standard JK. I'd need to see an auto, and I'd need to inspect the connectors on the PCM to see exactly what they have plugged into that same cavity. It's possible it's just grounded, and could be used as you...

HOW-TO: DIY Kill Switch for JK Wrangler

I looked at the factory service manual because I wanted to include this in the HOW-TO. Unfortunately, the NSS in the JK is a very complicated beast. It's integrated into the trans and uses a variable resistance to tell the PCM what gear the trans is in. Without having one to play with, I don't...

HOW-TO: DIY Kill Switch for JK Wrangler

There are many ways to skin this cat obviously. I wanted to stay away from the fuel pump wire for a few reasons: 1. That's a 10amp wire, so your switch and wire needs to be able to handle that current. 2. You have to manually turn it on to start and run the Jeep, then remember to manually...

HOW-TO: DIY Kill Switch for JK Wrangler

A hidden kill switch is great theft deterrence - even if someone manages to get your keys, they still won’t be able to start the Jeep. It’s an easy DIY on the cheap, total time is something like 30 - 45 minutes. Things to buy A small momentary switch like this: Momentary car push button...
