Got the engine in, too, after a two-month delay searching for a throwout bearing that would fit. You see, the clutch rebuilder in Denver lost the original, and the newer, foreign-made one they provided wouldn’t fit the clutch fork. Neither would the one I ordered from an IH parts house. We even...
Kind of lost headway on this thread...
Next visit to Wheatland, we got some sound deadener installed in the cab, and repaired the cowl rust that is endemic to D-Series IH’s:
The cowl rust:
First, we cut an access hole to clean the leaves & dirt out of that air passage -
Treated...
That would be great if you could measure the cushion dimensions in the 8'.
I've tried every sensible combination & permutation I could think of, apart from setting them on edge.
Thank you-- I wish it went as well as it looks, I could do some camping until the IH is running.
4/19:
Took the seat in for its rehab:
Don’t really know why— it was barely broke in...
Next, I needed to get to work on that gas tank, and I figured the first order of business was some wire brushing to see what I had.
Leaks were what I had. That tank hadn’t been used for many years, so...
Next, was another trip to Coonrod’s for a seat, a driver-side fender with gas fill, and some other bits I don’t remember.
Coonrod’s is a treasure trove of parts:
And trucks:
Recognize that D-Series?
Had to stop for a refreshment on the way home:

Thanks man!
I learned to love old trucks in rural Wyoming: they’re tough, simple, functional. I love that.
Too bad about the IH, especially if it was rust free.

At this point, I had to run a little errand.
To Portland, OR.
To pick this up:
The thing is, I’d gotten a girlfriend a few months after I bought the NCO, and she doesn’t travel light. Roosevelt’s River-of-no-Return expedition comes to mind.
Frequently.
Anyway, that NCO was looking...
2/19: found a driver-side fender-fill tank on Binder Planet, bought from really nice guy who happens to be Gary Allen’s tour manager.
The delivery vehicle is in the left background.
I was super excited: I’d cleaned & lined the take-out tank for the M715, and got great results relatively...
A pic I found around this time (12/18) showing the direction I wanted to go:
A CL listing with the same vibe:
Those added incentive.

Came back to Wheatland a few weeks later with a rebuilt clutch assembly:
A replacement for the cracked exhaust manifold:
And the best crossmember I could find at Coonrod’s in Grant, CO, which also needed repair (just less than mine):
We repaired and reinforced it:
And we started the...
October ‘18, time to get to work on the rear main seal issue.
First step: engine removal.
Pretty much the standard routine
Except for this:
A broken transmission crossmember.
The parts list grows yet again...

Thanks man! Covid-19 has the build shut down for the foreseeable future (I'm not going to risk bringing it to Harry with his bad lungs), so I guess some luck would be handy getting rid of this plague.
SR-2's are the bomb!
Fast-forward a few weeks, cast is off my hand, ready to get to it.
Time to drop the tank after removing the huge skid plate under it-
We never could figure out why it had been disconnected and replaced with a plastic, bed-mounted tank. I thought all that mouse-nest junk probably answered...
It was about this point I broke my right thumb riding in my buddy’s UTV, so wrenching was off the table.
Towed the camper to Wheaterville:
Went to the IH show & swap meet in Kremmling, CO:
Checked this out on the way home:
