While we're on the topic, I'm interested in the durability of a synthetic rope after years and year in the sun.
If someone were, for example, to spend a couple of years driving around Africa, would a synthetic rope deteriorate in the baking sun?
Thanks,

Let's do the math.
10.5 * 25.4 = 266 . Let's call it 265
The original is 33 inches high, which is 838cm. To get the sidewall height we have to subtract the rim from that .
33 -16 * 25.4 = 431.8. Divide it by two (for the two sidewalls involved in the overall height) = 215.9.
So what fraction...
You'll do great. My 2.5ltr 5speed with 31s was great for 40,000miles from Alaska to Argentina.. I went over more mountain passes than I can count, including having it up to 15,500 feet more than a couple of times.

Hey Luis, Great post !
Since you seem active right now, I'll ask you here.
How do you like the Engel 45 size-wise? I'm absolutely going to run an Engel myself, and I'm thinking either the 27, 35 or the 45.
I'm trying to keep absolutely everything in my build on the smaller/ligher side as total...
More accurately, I think it's Australia's most remote off-road test. It's challenging because you're so far from anywhere, not because the actual 4x4ing is tough.
I've always wondered how people smoke shocks.
I've always thought it's a function of driving too fast?
(and being overloaded with...
Do we know for sure they're registered in the US?
Many provinces in Canada only require a rear number plate, and you can put whatever you want on the front.
Lots of people put plates on from their favorite US state, and obviously California is a popular one.
It could be registered in Canada...
If you're not doing an aux gas tank, I think the best place is on the other side of the drive shaft from the regular gas tank. (where a couple of the aux. gas tanks mentioned above go).
That way the weight is extremely low, but it's also centered between the front and rear axles, rather than...
You're absolutely right that discussion is healthy, and I welcome it.
What's not constructive is when Person A says "I bought/built/have xyz because it meets my needs" then Person B comes along and says "That's stupid/absurd/pointless because it doesn't meet my needs."
The fact the given mod...
Awesome adventure guys, I will be following for sure.
I can't wait to get "home" one day and do a lap around (I grew up in Mildura, have not been back to Oz in 8 years now...)
I really enjoyed that one too. It does a great job of covering the mental aspects of long term travel.
Have fun!

You should be able to finish the OM606T for a lot less than $10k, depending on how much you want to do yourself.
Though the engine will likely have ~100k miles.

Well said.
So many people spend their time on this forum criticizing others for making mods they don't want/need.
There is no need for those comments, just don't make those purchases!

The two ideas combined are exactly what I plan to do when I start my build:
1. Get the Long Range (or Long Ranger) fuel tank that mounts next to the drive shaft (on the other side from the stock tank)
2. Cut out the cubby and weld a flat sheet over it.
3. Move the muffler / get a tiny one...
Which demonstrates perfectly that each of us has our own different goals and needs, and our own approach to get there.
Some of us want a stripped down Jeep to meet our goals.
