Actually you could have the smaller tube on the bottom, weld a brace part way up (say 3/8" offset from the trailer tub), then have the larger tube slotted to go over the offset. The minimal structural loss from the slot really shouldn't be an issue with the weight spread out over 4 uprights.
Thanks! I have spent the last 2 days doing nothing but net surfing. I found this post which is what I want to do: https://www.4xoverlandadventures.com/anatomy-of-a-diy-trailer-part-3/
He has a thread on here (listed in the write up) but working off my iPhone it was easier to link to his site.
Noise level isn't too bad in these. I insulated mine more to keep the heat out but it did drop level a bit. I can carry on a conversion without any problem and don't wear hearing protection in mine.
Dave,
I think it's great that you've helped others with their builds when this is actually your business to sell trailers. I'd love to be part of the "herd" but financially just can't swing that.
I actually just started my own project on a M116A2 (glad I found this thread) but Friday morning...
Totally agree. We found Oct to be perfect weather and the crowds were minimal. Just check the schedule for other local events. We squeezed in between the Terilinqua Chili Cookoff and a big motocross event last year.
Glad to be following your thread. I started on my M116A2 generator trailer yesterday and was on the way to the sandblaster when I tripped and broke my kneecap. Going to be 8-12 weeks before I can get any work done on it.
I've had at least one Nissan for the last 25 years (my dad is still driving my '93 pickup). I've had some minor problems but otherwise they've all been pretty reliable vehicles. My '04 Canyon on the other hand was the biggest POS I've ever driven (unfortunately traded a Gen1 Xterra in on it)...
I'd actually like a permanent setup like that. The 4th camera would be a backup unit but on all the time. If it could be saved via loop (to a flash drive or external HD) like a dash cam then it would be perfect.
Of course now that you've advertised it to a couple of million people anyone hoping to pick one up cheap is likely to be bidding against a lot more folks. The chance of getting one at a reasonable price just got reduced exponentially.
We were there in Oct '16 for 4 days. Loved it so much we're planning on a week this Oct. Didn't have the lay of the land so wound up in one of the regular camp sites. We'll be doing primitive sites next time.
Nissan's thing was to try and get a niche between 1/2t and 3/4t so the rating is more than standard 1/2t pickup. After driving a F250 for the last 8 years (an '05 that was stolen and a '11 currently), both diesels, I'm looking for something a bit smaller just due to parking/maneuverability and...
Military LEDs are available for those buckets so hang on to them if you want to reuse or you can replace with entire units and still keep the original look.
