Do we really need a spare?

That lovely feeling when you've just ruined the sidewalls of two tires. And there's only one spare. Might as well be no spare at all.

    1966 "deuce and a half" M109A3

My friend is selling this 1966 "deuce and a half" M109A3. The M109A3 is the same as the more common M35A2 (open truck) in the M44A2 "deuce" series, but the M109A3 "shop van" has a box mounted on the back. Ready-to-go camper! 1966 M109A3 2½ ton shop van 6x6 (10 wheel drive) multifuel engine...

    1983 Toyota 4X4 Chinook Build

How does the Chinook deal with frame flex when you are on those trails? Is the plywood floor just bolted to the truck frame? Or is there a subframe?

Why are most aftermarket wheels so BroDozer?

Sometimes the stock steel wheels just aren't wide enough to support larger tires. I was very sad to finally lose my "ugly" stock steel wheels. I found the plainest aftermarket wheels I could find, but I still prefer the stock steel ones. Though the new ones do have holes, which are...

Decision Time - Single Rear Tires vs Dual on Ambulance

Well, I have four times adventured with friends who roll with duallies -- and one of those times I ended up having to pull a rock out from between their duallies with my tow strap. (It was a 10-tire Deuce ½ with old military tires.)

    Laptops for Overlanding Travels

I run a Surface too. I love not having to use a keyboard or mouse when I have it mounted as a touchscreen tablet on my dash. And that I don't have to fiddle with bluetooth (ugh!) keyboards to use it as a laptop computer when I'm camped in the evenings. The screen is nice and bright for daytime...

Giant Loop Armadillo Bag utility bladder review

Neat! Note, these are for fuel not water. (Not obvious to me at first.) The larger ones could be useful to make use of awkwardly-shaped storage areas where a rigid container wouldn't fit well. Like maybe inside a hollow custom bumper. (Hmmm, or maybe that particular example is not the best...

    Anybody own an OPUS-15?

OK, there's a distinct lack of photos here, except for a Facebook thing that doesn't load for me. Here is what the Opus 15 looks like, for the clueless but curious (like me): https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/opus-op-15.207821/

    Back into a WJ

I love the simplicity of the Quadra-Drive 4x4 system with its automatic mechanical gerotor locking system. No electronics to fail! And the sound and torque of that 4.7l V8 engine (though sadly it does chug gasoline like it's Gatorade). I bought mine new in 2000, with factory skid plates, and...

    Back into a WJ

I love my WJ, but it doesn't get as much use these days. Here are some old photos of a WJ having fun: Horse Bench Road, UT (39.8058,-109.9344) (2001) Horse Bench Road, UT (39.8058,-109.9344) (2001) Lion's Back, Moab (38.5788,-109.5287) (2001) Lion's Back, Moab (38.5788,-109.5287) (2001)...

    E350 10ft Box Van

Though it's the Kleenex of box van terms - it was originally a Chevy marketing term -- along with the long-forgotten Dodge "Kary Van".

    external key storage

Yes, that's what I do! I always hide my key somewhere in the van when I go out (can't lose it), and have my keypad remote mounted near my rear license plate. I also have another key ziptied hidden up in the frame somewhere, but don't tell anyone :)

    Flat Tire External Sidewall Repair?

One thing I learned is that wire is actually not suitable for sewing up tires. It fatigues and breaks as it flexes, as you can see it's started to do in the above image. Instead I now carry kevlar thread.

    How to manage photo libraries?

Speaking of geotagging with GPS coordinates -- and I know I'm pretty nerdy here -- but I encode the lat/lon coordinates from EXIF into the filename so I can instantly search by location just by typing in the search box on the Windows file window. I encode in [NS]#######[EW]####### format. For...

    Flat Tire External Sidewall Repair?

I think I've posted my Baja tire sidewall repair story here before... Even though I did so many things "wrong", it still got me back to pavement, and then even down the road to the tire shop. https://www.sportsmobileforum.com/forums/f17/scenic-tire-change-25874.html
