    JK Battery?

Only 80-85%? Hmm....sure if you don't let the Jeep run long enough, but a DCDC will have the same issue. The JK alternator will produce 14.3-14.6V and higher (at times, temps) which is almost perfect for most AGMs/ deep cycle batteries. (Perfect is up to 15.2V when adjusted for cold temps)...

    Yaesu/Kenwood Radios, Antenna/Antenna Location Comparison

I haven't tested it yet - just a buddy back east that was did some VHF simplex comparisons...(the FT2980r & TM-281). No - just didn't notice if it did or did not de-sense/go mute at the time. I killed APRS once I was stationary for a while..and while doing most of these tests. Next time I'm...

    Yaesu/Kenwood Radios, Antenna/Antenna Location Comparison

Thx for the great response...It has been a while since I played with (aka analyzed) comms (I'm a power electronics engineer). So by fringe & range, I mean total distance between transceivers - before the radio drops squelch/becomes garbled. Good point on the dedicated analog vs mixed digital...

    Yaesu/Kenwood Radios, Antenna/Antenna Location Comparison

Most hams I've spoken to have said the Icom 2m/uhf is not as good as the Kenwood Radios and intermod is worse....however, most hams have also told me about the 1/4 vs 1/2 wave stuff and that Yaesu/Kenwood were interchangeable... It all depends on who you know (if they are on DSTAR) and who you...

    CTEK 250S Poor solar performance

You can still buy both - with and without btooth. What's interesting is I find the dongle has better range...the internal solar btooth 2nd and the BMV 712 comes in third for range.. Many times when caravaning with my wife, (she's in the Jeep, I'm in the van), the Victron with dongle in the Jeep...

    Yaesu/Kenwood Radios, Antenna/Antenna Location Comparison

Thought I would share some of my recent testing with 2M/70cm radios Prior to this test, I was/still am heavily 'invested' in Yaesu radios I own 4 Yaesu radios. I just recently picked up a Kenwood. 3 Yaesus and the Kenwoord were all purchased weeks of each other about 6 weeks ago. This testing...

    CTEK 250S Poor solar performance

Partially shaded arrays (one in full sun, one in shade) perform better when connected in parallel. My CTEK testing revealed terrible solar performance when compared to Kisae or Victron without changing the wiring configuration. Regardless, with 320W or solar, you're getting close to the upper...

    Captain Texas Anvil JKU build

Did your plastic pieces pull out yet? Several of mine did after a few months...I ended up putting in nutserts as there was too much slop. Edit : love the table though. I've had it for several years now.

    JK Battery?

Ah ok... those are estimates. 12.0-12.1V was that voltage resting? Any load will depress the battery voltage and give an artificially low values. Fridges are worth their weight in gold...I've never looked back. I honestly find the system to be relatively care free...

    Captain Texas Anvil JKU build

I replaced mine too late...and i run heavy and drive/tow long distances, also heavy. If I recall, it was around 80-90ishk. I used factory take off arms. HUGE differnce. Enxt step is all the sway bar bushings as they have appeared to have collapsed a bit. Body mounts will be sometime soon too.

    JK Battery?

The following is not a new proposal around here...intall a single Group 31 100Ah under the hood...use a JSS tray for 3.8s or modify the factory box to accept a single battery (3.6L motors) Then if you really need it, drop a 2nd battery in the rear for when you need the add'l juice. A dual...

New JL - Rubi vs Sport for basic Overland travel

Rubicon everytime: unlock front swaybar, lockers, transfer case, stronger axles, ground clearance. All of this from the factory with factory engineering for a few k more? No brainer. I own an 07 JKU Rubicon, and i have NEVER once wished for a lesser crawl ratio, weaker axles, manual sway bar...

    Why use a RTT?

What is a thread complaining about the excesses of overlanding without a comment or two about snorkels & rivers. Seems most people forget they are damned useful in both high & low deserts, sandy, and dusty locations...one year I swapped out my engine air filter a dozen times in my jeep...and...

    Overlands Fridge Test,

The small USB internal fan runs continuously... completely eliminated all the thermal statification except if the food is packed too tightly. It is a 120mm 5v with a speed control...it runs on low. The external fan only runs above a setpoint and if the cooler is running...

    Overlands Fridge Test,

Very True, my Dometic CFX65dz and his ARB (50L?) ran off the same model of 100aH battery (mfr'd a few weeks apart) and got roughly the same use. My Dometic drew about 25% less energy according to our Victron BMV712 meters over a day so than his did...both covered, both out of the sun. The...

    Why use a RTT?

I think that is pretty much true everywhere these days...with the exception of the Artic and a few mountain ranges here/there, the world is a very well traveled & explored place, Now while it may have been a while since someone was there before you...there was someone there before you and mapped...

    Overlands Fridge Test,

Violently Agree...except for two things: it is Ah (not AH) and Wh efficiency is very important for systems that sit for a few days before having access to charge power. I no long bother with solar if I am going to be in one spot for 2 nights 3 days, my aux battery is more than large enough...

    Rainy night in an Oztent

Seasoning a canvas tent will waterproof it - usually you soak with a hose a couple of times and let it dry. It can be done at any time. This will 'swell' the tent and close up the seams....sometimes you have to use seam sealer. The issue with the zippers may be associated with seasoning, lack of...

6-person tent for high heat and rain? (REI basecamp 6 is cooking us)

I've run all sorts of tents...from small backpackers to REI Kingdom 6 to Keltys to a 10x16 Kodiak Canvas Vx... The space of the 10x16 will easily accommodate 6 people and give space to move around. Want to use some cots? Go for it... Canvas tent, hands down - Springbar or Kodiak...doesn't...
