I had good experience with Fox shocks on 3/4 ton 4x4 van. The shocks seemed to add quite a bit of wheel travel to the rear. I had bad experience with Toyo AT's on the van.....not nearly as soft as the BFG AT's and had one tire get a bulge on gravel roads. Have had bad experiences with other...
I doubt you lose much money, if any, on a used pop up truck camper if you turn around and sell it within one year. So I think stating a $15K "cost" is incorrect unless you plan on keeping it forever. I bet you will be out less money than what it would cost for a truck topper.
I vote for trailer and truck. Hate the idea of having to pack up camp every time you need something from the store and can't really go to many stores with a 30ft class C RV.
I'd go with a popup slide in camper. Might check with rvshare I saw a few pop up slide in campers on their website available for rent. A van would be another great option if you can find a 4x4 camper van to rent.
I think the GM and Nissan vans can just as good if not better platforms depending on your needs. The GM vans seems like they have more lift options and likely more wheel travel available. The transit unibody construction just doesn't allow for much wheel travel. Nissan and GM vans both have tow...
Cool thread, thanks for posting. Surprised more people on this site don't use pop-ups. So much more space and comfort over the offroad trailers and other camping setups I've seen and much less money. Looks like you got one in very good shape. What did you end up doing on the roof sag? Am...
In my opinion the V10 is the better choice over 7.3. Those 7.3's are god awful noisy and smelly, you couldn't pay me to drive one.
A 4x4 Van would do everything your looking to do and then some. I really don't think anybody is actually buying used excursions for $20-30K, down here in TX the...
Kindly disagree. They stopped producing the Excursion in 2005, over 12 years ago man. We could disagree as to whether or not you think a Quigley van is "production", but the Chevy and Ford Vans with straight axles were "produced" with diesels and straight axles up until recently.....wanna say...
Avoid an air mattress if you can. Takes too much time to air up and deflate and hard to keep the kido's from playing on them, which will create holes. Lesson learned from last trip out with kidos.
Cool and congrats. Feel sorry for you guys outside of TX. There are a ton of these for sale around here. Almost bought a 05 GX with 69K miles on it few months ago. And their all driven by mom's that have never been offroad in them.
LOL, Not really a breakthrough in automotive design to build a truck that drives like a semi, but without the airride seats.
Just the other week I pulled out stuck 3/4 ton Dodge 4x4 cummins with lift and tires with my sedan,...... oops I mean bone stock 2018 Z71 Crew Cab that rides like a...
You know you can switch gears manually with all the new trucks right? Not the same, but still. I bought an 18 Chevy and the manual actually recommends using the manual gear mode when towing.
Only thing wrong with the Chevy interior is the 4x4 button, it's hard to shift into 4x4 with confidence...
Had rich buddy in high school with new expedition and was crazy hard on his cars. That car took a beating and kept on ticking. Was amazed at how capable offroad it was. It seemed to do everything and then some and it had no lift or tires. Only problem I recall was some kind of antifreeze leak...
Kindly disagree. Excursions regularly compete with 4x4 vans and 2500 and 3500 suburbans and are both within same specs. What one loses in towing it makes up in payload capacity. Straight axles are a matter of preference. I'd prefer not to sit on top of a straight axle because the ride sucks, but...
Kindly disagree. Perhaps I should of said a Quigley Express van is a better platform than 4x4 suburban. More space with same drivetrain. I never felt unsafe in my 02 Quigley van. Don't think new suburban's can be as easily modified as the van's either. With new ZR2 hard to say that GM is...
+1. The old 350's were not great either. At about 150-180K they need to be rebuilt IMO. The 5.3L is a great motor tho, good to 250-300K. I've driven a chevy truck all my life and dad always had a suburban growing up. Think the express van is a better platform than suburban tho.
