jgaz.....yes and as best I recall that circle was fairly large.....just a guess here but I'm thinking maybe 18". And you're welcome.....as I've said many times I really enjoy journaling in the early morning hours with my hot mug of black coffee with my two best friends close by. This morning I'm...
More ruins were located just beyond & below the mouth of the cave.....
These grooves in the stones were interesting.....I'm guessing possibly that this is where they sharpened tools & arrowheads (I'm no archeologist).....
And this spot where they ground their corn.....
Tons of rock...
Riversdad.....yea, it always feels good to be out there. I enjoy the new experiences.....
Ace.....yes, I'm working with Trapper daily and I've allowed her to run free four times so far. Three times at Lower Butler Wash went really well. Once at Valley of the Gods not so well.....rabbit...
The rock art here was superb but honestly what I loved about this site was it's location.....
This was as close to anything that even remotely resembled climbing for months now.....the views up there were outstanding.....and Procession Panel was pretty great too.....
The sun was...
When I first came to Lower Butler Wash I had no plan as to which site I would visit first nor did I have any sequence planned.....it just seemed to happen the way it did. And the way it did happen was that I had saved the best hikes / sites for last. So the next site that we visited here was...
A few days later we were back out.....next up for us were the Double Stack Ruins at Mile Post 4.0.....
I'd say that at this point in our exploration that these sites were beginning to look the same (maybe that's why I'm having so much trouble identifying each one ?).....
Amazing...
jgaz.....well, I don't know. I thought I knew what I was talking about. If I'm wrong it's not my fault.....my odometer being broken was a major pain for me. There's tons of side roads off the main road that parallels the wash & there are no signs so it sure wasn't easy finding anything...
From there we headed to Fishmouth Cave.....at Milepost 13.0.....this was the furthest that we drove from our campsite to access any of these ruins.....often route finding was difficult as nothing is marked here.....random trails left by lost hikers seem to be everywhere.....obviously not the...
The next ruin that we visited was named Split Level Ruins.....located at Milepost 9.8. For access to every ruin in this wash, one parks on the east side of Butler Wash and then hikes in a westerly direction down into said wash.....
.....then up and out continuing west into one of the many...
tgil.....I was thinking this morning how the words "blast" & "rush" are pretty much not a part of my vocabulary.....maybe something like this....."the dogs blasted out of the camper in their rush to hike & play".....hmmmm.....I guess that doesn't include me. And yea, it was a welcomed...
pkripper.....it's a special place for sure.....
Last night I was standing on a rock ledge at Moki Point overlooking The Valley of the Gods.....several thousand maybe more feet below.....I watched the sunset and as it disappeared into the horizon I watched thousands of stars as they magically...
I took way too many pictures.....
.....and I would imagine that I lingered here way too long as well.....
Eventually we moved on.....we continued south along the highway and utilizing our newly acquired map.....it took us to the Lower Butler Wash.....
We had finally arrived at...
wyowandering.....yep I agree.....only once in my days of wandering in the wilderness have I ever seen such a high volume of hunters (northern Utah was the other) in one location. There was non stop traffic on the forest service roads nearest the river (not near so bad beyond). The field...
After that night spent in a Walmart parking lot, I was looking forward to our next stop.....back into the wild.....
Recapture Point was next on the to do list.....this too was just another overnight spot.....
We walked along the sandy roads in the evening and walked those sandy roads...
Next up was a visit to McPhee Reservoir.....
I decided to stick with the dirt & gravel back roads of the San Juan National Forest.....
It was a cold day out there and snow flurries fell quite often.....
We arrived at McPhee Reservoir and parked in the campground and I gave thought...
JD.....so beautiful.....
Just a quick post this morning to say thank you to the mayor of Cortez, Colorado. Yesterday the odometer on the Jeep was acting up once again, as it often does (that means it wasn't working). Mayor Mike was stopped along the dirt road and I asked if they could lead me...
The clouds of the early morning began to drift to the east and it turned out to be a sensational weather day.....just a great day to be out in the Jeep exploring.....
I don't recall the length of that dead end road (it ended at a man made dam.....damn, I sure do hate those man made...
Jgaz.....I've read one of his books years ago (Over the Edge ) and I've got another one in the camper right now. He was good friends with David Roberts and the two of them often climbed & explored together. His name is brought up often in The Search for the Old Ones. That's a nice panel in your...
We hiked along the back roads.....
.....maybe just to stretch the legs a bit more.....or maybe to get more in touch with the Old Ones or Ancient Ones as I now affectionately call them.....
Eventually we would return to the Jeep.....
Tanner by far way ahead of us.....poor Trapper...
tgil.....what Ace said.....Ouray I like best of the three towns you mentioned.....
Arjan.....thanks for taking the time to comment.....
Ace.....it's certainly a beautiful place but I guess I just struggled to figure out how to enjoy it. I'd read (and actually passed by it) that there's a trail...
