Icon sells black rubber shock boots that go over that chrome shaft. That shaft will get peppered from sand and rocks coming off the front tires... eventually making them rough and eating shaft seals. I have the boots on my rear resis for this very reason.
Gears are a trade of no matter what you choose. I chose 4.88 for better power and lower first gear on the trail.
4.88= better power
4.56= slightly better mpg
That said, the 4.88's require a larger front third member so they are more costly to install. 4.56 will go in the stock third.
I have been in torrential downpours on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington without issue. The fly works.

Love Oki, spent some time there myself. Agree with Tango, leave it stock and use the heck out of it, buy something else when you get back to CONUS. Go light on the Habu Sake ;)
