    Need a real axe

I've been pleased with Corona's Forged Michigan Ax with Solid Fiberglass Handle (Model No. AX 70020). It's a good all-around ax, and has held up well to the elements. It's my wedge-bumping ax when felling trees, and rides in the vehicle with a machete for utility uses. Iltis Ox-Head and...

    U.P. Overland 2009

No worries - the world is going to end in 2012 anyway. :Wow1:

    U.P. Overland 2009

I'd echo the comments above. I think that what does and should continue to distinguish UPOverland from other "runs" is the history and sightseeing element. An overlook, a historic point of interest, an old town or mine, these are all the sorts of things that put meaning and context into...

    Upgrading bulbs in lights. PIAA

Looks like it takes an H3 bulb. Perhaps trying a 100w (more options than 85w, which the 520 comes with), with a whiter color temperature...for $20-25 for a pair, you might as well give it a go.

    Got A New Gun .38 S&W

Very nice gun. Such beautiful lines to those old S&W revolvers with the thin barrels. I've been meaning to pick one of those up for some time, just to have as a fun gun. You've inspired me - maybe I'll go lookin' this weekend...

    Bethel, Maine Jeep Jamboree?

Please snap some pics and post them, eh? Of all the JJ trips, this is probably the one I would most like to do...but have yet to find the time to get up there to do it.

    Are bigger lights better?

It all depends, doesn't it? I got more real world use out of my Hella 500 series driving lights than I've gotten out of my Hella FF1000 lamps, or the IPF lamps that are still in their original box in the garage. Ultimately, you have to ask: what's the point of having auxiliary lighting that...

Tire repair kits, should I carry one?

Yup, I would suggest you carry one. They can fix all kinds of troubles, for you and for other motorists. Especially if it is just a simple nail/screw - you can fix it without so much as jacking your vehicle up. Remove foreign object, ream out hole, insert plug, trim flush to/beneath tread...

    Rovers of Nantucket

Same here, which caused me to look up that line on wikipedia, to see what they had to say about it. They actually have an blurb about it.

    Fun time "Overhaulin" a Jeep

OK, so we want to overhaul my TJ... Swap an oil burner, NV4500, and an Atlas; extra points if we can get 25+mpg out of the deal. No computers, please; Michigan doesn't inspect or emissions test, so we're cool there. A snorkel is a must. Make sure everything is vented and sealed as...

School me on home-defense (gun related).

For what it's worth, I had NO idea of how the criminal and drug-addled underclass operated and the risks they present to the rest of us until I started working with them in a professional capacity. I didn't grow up in or around that community, so I really knew little of it except what I saw on...

    downgrade?

I ran 31-10.50 and 3" of lift on my YJ. It worked well enough. But in hindsight I really, REALLY wish I had regeared from 3.07 to 4.11...but then I would have broken D35 stuff even more often than I did. If you're going to keep the D35, I would go back to the 31s, raise the transfer case back...

Post your most recent Handmade Mod

I needed a way to organize my supplies for UPOverland2009 for two adults in a TJ for a week, with the goal being to not need to obtain anything along the way except fuel. I needed to fit this stuff, plus two folding chairs and two duffel bags, into the Jeep, in such a way that I could get at...

    My Drummond Island adventure

I'd definitely be game for a Spring weekend trip. I'm planning on putting together a spring version of the UPOverland trip, so hopefully they won't end up on the same weekend...

School me on home-defense (gun related).

Peripheral issue: home security is set up in layers. A simple explanation can be found in "Jim Grover's" (Kelly McCann) book Street Smarts, Firearms, and Personal Security. In essence, you need to make sure that it takes some effort for someone to get to (or through) your door without their...

    Winter/Snow Tires

Yokahama Geolandar I/T have done me well on the Jeep. Even at 31-10.50 they're handled everything better than expected; I wish I could have found a 31-9 or 31-8.5, though, on such a light vehicle.

Is it OK to air down "P" rated tires?

A little bit to take the edge off the ride, perhaps, but I'd not go crazy. I'm guessing it doesn't have the stoutest sidewalls out there...

    campsite pics..lets see um

A few campsites along the Lake Superior coast: Enthusiastic rainstorms are the enemy of comfortable tent camping...unless you've got TARPS! Sooner or later, though, the clouds clear out and you can dry your gear and enjoy a nice sunset. Bonus if you set up camp in a...
