Into the heart of darkness - El Mirador with NLX

I just found this and read the whole thing. Thanks for posting. We will be visiting Guatemala this summer and although we probably won't get past Tikal, or maybe the easier to get to nearby ruins, so it is nice to live vicariously and see what lies beyond...

Range Rover classic to buy or not

I used to own a 74 MGB, the switch was pretty different, a rocker rather than a toggle. Still, it might fit in the hole and be wire compatible. I still have bad memories in the car of turning my lights on and off on the freeway at night to signal to a semi that it was safe to merge, except the...

Range Rover classic to buy or not

Drivetrain & suspension parts are common with contemporary Discovery 1s. I have never had a problem finding anything in the drivetrain. Things I have had trouble finding recent were ignition and headlight switches, although I eventually did.

Taking the 72 Series III to Expo West.

I have driven the part from Socorro on US-60 to Show Low, then AZ-260 to Payson, and AZ-87 to Lake Mary Road, and on to Flagstaff. It is a beautiful route, and with the exception of the AZ-260 part is very empty. Most of it is above 5000 or 6000 feet so it won't be stupid hot. If you want to...

5 gallon water exchange jugs in Central America

We are busy planning our water storage for our trip next summer. I know getting these water jugs full of purified water is easy in the parts of Mexico we have been to: We just exchange it for a full one at the store. Does anyone know if these are easy to get further south?

We need help upgrading from the point-and-shoot

That pretty much sums up what we want. Years ago I used my Dad's Pentax Spotmatic and played with apeture and shutter speed as much as my budget allowed (film and developing was expensive for a broke college student). Can anyone recommend a shop in Tucson where we can check out some of these...

Thanks, all! A lot to chew on.

We need help upgrading from the point-and-shoot

We have been getting some pretty awesome shots from our point-and-shoots for years, supplemented more recently by our smartphones. These photos have been used mainly for our blogs and sharing with friends and family, but occasionally for magazine articles. Most of these photos are of our...

    Vehicle locator

I am looking into this as well. I found Spot has a new product, the Spot Trace, which is purely a vehicle tracker that communicates via satellite. About $100 plus about $100 per year for the service. http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=128 Leave a bread crumb trail so you can see...

Can the battery powered zodi shower pump hot water?

I have not had good luck with that pump, unfortunately.

Is our fridge still working correctly?

Thanks for all the responses. I read on an Australian forum the insulation in these older Engels breaks down, which means they have to work a lot hard. I will try and add some insulation to the outside and see how much that helps. Does anyone know what kind of insulation is in the transit...

Is our fridge still working correctly?

Our refrigerator definitely needs love. It was 68 inside after running all night out on the porch at "3".

Is our fridge still working correctly?

Thanks, that is great info. Our has been like that since we got it 5 years ago, but it is much older than that. How old is yours? After a couple of hours the temp inside rose to 42F, and has held steady there for quite a while. Of course, the sun also went down.

Is our fridge still working correctly?

It is on "3". We put it on 2.5 if we have lettuce inside, and 3 if we want our drinks ice cold. It has been like that since we got it. It is a Norcold Tek II, which according to the Engel folks I talked to at the Overland Expo is a rebranded Engel from a few years ago.

Is our fridge still working correctly?

Running on 120VAC in the house it holds 38F easily. I am going to put it on the porch and run it off a battery next. It is 103 out so that should be a good test.

Is our fridge still working correctly?

I need a sanity check on our refrigerator. We have a Norcold/Engle 45 we bought used off eBay 5 years ago and have been very happy with it, up until this past weekend. We ended up camping where the daytime temperatures reached 95F and the lows were around 60 (Sunny Flat campground in southeast...

    Overland Expo West, 2014

Someone asked for more photos: Not going to Phoenix: An eclectic mix: The view from the RV park: Folks evidently like their Kermit chairs. Too bad we could not find a vendor selling any. Jim West spotting an air-suspended EarthRoamer: The newest flying carpet:

    Overland Expo West, 2014

Here was the best meal we had all weekend: The older gentleman grew up in Spain and cooked a Paella feast. He invited us over and offered the meal to us on condition that we have some wine.

    Overland Expo West, 2014

I am really surprised by this. I commuted on Lake Mary Road every day for almost 10 years, up until 2004. The road used to be a lot narrower between the Lower Lake Mary and the Forest Service office, there was barely any shoulder at all. Even with that tiny shoulder, I never had a problem...
