I'd like to chime in as well - I considered all of the RTT designs and after a long conversation with Mike at Autohome (who is as helpful as everyone else has mentioned) I decided the Maggiolina Grand Tour was the right product for me. Yes, it cost a fortune, but for me it was worth every penny...
There are certian products that are waaaaay cheaper to buy than to build yourself and the camp kitchen stand is definately one of them.
As for 20,000 BTU: we just upgraded from the standard walmart cheapy propane grill to a coleman unit called the roadtrip. It's modular so it can be used as a...
I just picked up a nearly new Craigslist Norcold 60 (sells under Engel and ARB brands as well). Rather than trial and error, I thought I'd get tips from folks on how best to pack it.
For example, for 5 days on Mojave Rd, my goal would be to keep meet frozen but not freeze my lettuce. The idea...
Racks are terrible for MPG because they disrupt the air flow. From my personal experience, drag coefficient affects MPG far more than weight. My MPG improved slightly when I went from the full roof basket to the Maggiolina even though the RTT weighs more.
The "issue" of carrying longboards was a major determining factor for me in choosing which RTT to buy. This is one reason why I decided on the Magiolina Grand Tour which allows you to mount crossbars on it. I carry 2 longboards up there and I can raise the tent with the boards on top. An added...
I have no experience with dry ice. Anyone who has used dry ice, please post up how it compares to regular ice. Also if it is better, does it justify the added expense and hassle of finding it vs ice which is free?
I agree. I think mine was defective and I ordered a new one which just arrived today. I will return the other one - exactly why I bought it from Costco.
Airing down takes forever. I know there are products out there to speed the process, but they're kind of expensive.
Is there any reason why you can't just back the valve out of them stem so the air rushes out quickly and then put it back in? I tried it and it took about 35 sec to release the...
After reading SocalFJ's issues with the Quickair 3, I thought I'd do a test with the Q89 from Costco for $150 since it's basically a knockoff of the Quickair.
I aired all four tires down to 20lbs and reinflated to 47lbs. These are BFG AT 315/75/16 - pretty big tires so it takes a lot of air...
This thread is interesting. I have the dual piston Q89 which is a Chinese knockoff of the Quickair 3. It filled my 315s from 20 to 48 in about 5 min per tire. But it only got through 3 tires and barely into the 4th before it shutoff. I was thinking about putting my 12v fan on it since the place...
It wasn't clear from your post if this is for vehicle camping or not. If you don't need to carry the tent on your back, then you absolutely can't beat the REI Base Camp 4 for quality and value. It's totally storm proof and will handle heavy wind no problem. It's big enough to bring your chairs...
That old myth about sleeping naked to stay warm is bogus nowadays. But it had it's origins in the days when warm clothing was really bulky before today's lightwieght, compressable high tech materials. SO, back when you had to wear multiple layers of heavy, bulky wool your body's diameter...
I think if you start snooping around the RV supply websites, you'll find what you need. Most likely it will be in the form of tablets that you drop into your full tank. They will purify everything in there.
After seeing this thread, I picked up a pair of of 14" by 48" by 2" grates with the grip for $118 delivered from ebay. Price was right for me. Thanks for the tip.
I just wanted to let people know that rebuilding the winch is super easy. I have a Warn M12000 and I'm glad I took it apart because it had some rust and the old grease was hard and dry. I rebuilt it for a few bucks in new gaskets and a tube of high temp grease. I also took the opportunity to...
Just a quick thought:
By the time you modify the hammock with a pad and reflective barrier eitc, you're nearing the weight/bulk of a tarp tent which would allow you to sleep flat. I love hammocks, but if your sore and tired, sleeping on level ground might be better than the curve of a hammock.
I'm 6'2" and the the Grand Tour Med works fine. I'd prefer it to be a few inches longer, but I didn't want the extra width of a large. The matress itself is definately too short. But there's a slot at the head where the scissor jacks tuck into that adds maybe 3 in of length - I put my pillow...
I've been lurking here a bit but haven't gotten around to contributing. Thanks to everyone for their informative postings. I drive a 97 FZJ80 with all the typical bumpers, lift, etc. The plan is an around the world trip and I'm tinkering here and there to get the truck ready. In the meantime...
