I'll comment - I like the fiberglass grid boards because they double as sand ladders and bridging ladders. I have used them to get up a wash out "shelf" and my truck weighs 7000lbs. I have the 2" ones in 48" length. They also make a great platform for showering on or washing dishes to let water...
Just drive the two and you'll see. I went through the same questions a couple of years ago and drove the LR3 - it feels like a plastic kids toy compared to the GX470. From the quality perspective, there is no comparison, though the LR always "look" cooler. The GX has the most amazing suspenion...
I welded a little steel grate to the vertical arm the supports my spare tire on the rear bumper swingout. This effectively creates a storage compartment big enough to hold all four tire chains for the 35" tires in the wheel - it's a lot of space.
Nice traveling everyone.
Here's my list - All traveled with backpack and on public transportation. Next goal: see it all again plus more traveling in my LC80.

Canada
Mexico
Belize
Guatemala
Cuba
Honduras
El Salvador
Nicaragua
Costa Rica

This is an interesting thread. As an 80 owner I can attest to something that hasn't been mentioned enough by the other posts. The 80 is far more comfortable for highway driving than any jeep. Even with a 4" lift and 35" tires and a full expedition kit, it's smooth as silk at 80mph (though I...
This is an intersting thread. I had never considered the need to take my Norcold fridge out of the car. It's fully enclosed in my plywood rear cargo storage setup and the windows are heavily tinted. Technically the odor might be an issue but the fridge (with its rubber gasket) is much better...
I have the OEM sub tank switch. It's continuous. I wired mine using George's little circuit brain and the OEM overhead console with fuel gauge. George's circuit brain is billiant - it senses when the aux tank sending unit is empty and automatically shuts off the transfer pump - and it's only $25.
Maybe it can be combined with another order if someone else is shipping to SoCal?.
I'm only familiar with the Long Ranger product. How does the FrontRunner compare for the 80 series? How much rear ground clearance is lost?
I already have the 13 gal OEM aux tank installed and plumbed with the dual filler neck and transfer pump. Is it possible to buy just the tank only rather than the whole kit? If so, how much would that be? I've been wanting to sell the OEM aux tank and get something with more capacity.
Great pics. I was up there the 3rd weekend in March and made it almost to the Burgess Mine before getting stuck in knee deep snow. We had to dig out and turn back. I'm glad to see the pics of what we missed.
Those are the 8" Thule towers. The RTT is the Grand Tour which is the tallest Maggiolina and the crossbars are an inch or so above the top of the RTT shell.
Maintaining the ability to carry surfboards was a priority for me in selecting a RTT and the main reason I went with the Grand Tour. I...
using the ropes to tow the sand ladders is a great idea, but i would much rather go through the "hassle" (as he calls it) of airing down than getting out my sand ladders.
The R rating is an insulation rating and is not on a scale of 10. The fiberlgass insulation in a standard wall built of 2x4s is R13 for comparison's sake. An air mattress will always be colder because it's R0 - there is no insulation as the air in the chamber will be the same as the ambient air...
I assume you're referring to Canyon Tajo, a little bit north of Laguna Hansen. It's really cool - like JTree with no crowds and Pinyon Pines.
Here are pics of a 3 pitch slab and the view from the top.
