A good tent would work but in your weather a trailer might be better? A trailer with access to the kitchen might be better than a tear drop in cold weather? A small airstream or similar would be great too :)

What a great truck and history of your grampa. I'd keep it a stock as possible but upgrade front brakes to disc and get a new master cylinder and maybe add power steering.

Lower air pressure is your friend on washboards. Experiment with what speed works best and watch out for crowned roads especially on turns :)
Can't really expect your expo set-up to drive like a Baja race truck but you can try :)
I have AC but don't use it much on dirt roads or rough trails as I like to have the windows open and also hear what is going on outside the truck.
I have seen people driving with the AC on and didn't know they had a flat tire from a sidewall cut because they couldn't hear the air coming out...
Right now I just have the flat floor in my 4R.

I keep basic tools, first aid kit, jumper cables, tow strap, tire plug kit, serpentine belt, small shovel and an air compressor in my 4R all the time. I carry a high lift, extra tools and large shovel on serious trips.

Get a 3rd one for more spares or sell both and get a newer vehicle?? It depends on how much time you want to spend tinkering vs out exploring. Greater reliability=less worry and more fun to me.
